Pacific Southwest Exposition aims to draw millions to Long Beach

Barstow hotels gear up as California readies for the Pacific Southwest Exposition at Long Beach from July 27 to August 13. The event expects heavy tourist traffic with international participation pledged from Belgium Mexico Guatemala Argentina Cuba Panama Germany the Netherlands and Sweden. Exhibits include international pavilions a Belgian town hall replica and a globe spanning dirigible race. Attendance could reach 730000 to 1000000 people within reach of the Bay Area to the Pacific coast.

Ocal Team Defeats Needles in 10 Innings

In a Sunday baseball classic at home, Ocal beat Needles 6 to 6 in ten innings amid wind and sunless skies. Both clubs played spirited, error-light ball with strong pitching and solid defense. The crowds praised all players, urged more support, and celebrated new talent like Langendorf and Hughes.

Beaten and robbed brings assailant to jail

W D Bangs a 14 year old boy was beaten over the head with an 18 inch iron bolt by Ted Farley 17. Farley admitted striking Bangs and robbed him while Bangs lay unconscious. Farley faces burglary and attempted murder charges. bond set at 2000 with preliminary trial planned.

Mining Activities Out From Barstow Grand View Mine Progresses

Progressive mining operations continue at the Grand View mine in Little Ord Mountain 28 miles southeast of Barstow. Christensen brothers’ three stamp mill ships bullion to the mint after a recent 36 hour test run yielded 1010 dollars in gold. The vein runs about 14 feet wide at under 100 feet depth as new camps form and Hollywood capital flows into the district for development.

Mining in Calico District opens with 500 foot shaft

New York investors in the Calico district announce active mining after core drilling proves ore at depth. Zenda Mining Company officials John Kasser and Richard Gemmill arrived to arrange with G Cleveland Taylor and X X Jackson to sink a 500 foot shaft on the Zenda property. They report ore body and gold values of eight dollars discovered, with plans to extend power service from Yermo via the Southern Sierras Power Company.

Garwood Visits Barstow to Inspect Purple Hills Prospect

George P. Garwood toured Barstow with three companions en route to his Purple Hills mining property near Daggett. The site shows two 200 foot shafts exposing a 3 to 5 foot ore shoot and ore samples yielding about 4 ounces of gold per ton. Garwood seeks additional capital to develop the ground.

Barstow Chamber Sets Meeting Minutes and Reports

The Barstow Chamber of Commerce held its regular meeting on Monday March 12 1928 at 8 p m at the Antlers Club with about 20 present. Topics included sewer system concerns for the business district and state appropriations for hard surfacing Arrowhead Trail and National Old Trails plus a report on the Los Lunas cut off on U S 66. The State Railway Commission hearing was noted for March 21 at the Grammar School auditorium. Adjourned to April 9 1928.

St Francis Dam in San Franciquito Breaks With Massive Losses

Flood from the St Francis dam failure devastates the San Franciquito area. Hundreds are dead or missing as millions in damages unfold. Dam built in 1926 cost 1.25 million dollars and fed the city aqueduct system. Plant No 2 destroyed, causing further water supply disruption. Plant No 1 out of service after flood.

Hospital addition planned for county facility in San Bernadino

Howard E. Jon of 518 Andreson Building has been commissioned to prepare plans and specifications for a hospital expansion to house 82 patients. The addition, costing about $45,000, will be built east of the main hospital and connect with the existing structure.

Broken Rail Triggers Santa Fe Train Wreck Near Yampa

At 11:30 p.m. Tuesday eastbound train No. 10 derailed two miles east of Yampa Arizona after a broken rail. Engine and cars piled across the main line for eight hours. Fatalities include engineer Tous A. Cole and J. Gordon Bailey. Several injured and bodies recovered after the cab was cut away. Bailey and Cole were well known. Bailey had just moved to Needles from Bakersfield. Conductor John Bland was aboard.

Deputy assessor Holloway Opens Barstow District Office

J M Holloway deputy assessor now assesses the Barstow district. His office at the Antlers lab is open 9 to 5 and until noon Saturdays. Soldiers sailors and others entitled to exemption are asked to call and claim exemption at the office.

County highway completes Trona Osdick road upgrade

The county highway commission finished a new road linking Trona and Osdick reducing mileage from 41 to 86 miles. The route is described as in better condition than ever before.

Woman's Club Card Party At Newberry Hosted By Harps

The Newberry Woman's Club held a card party at Mr and Mrs Harp home with seven tables of 500. Guests of honor were Mrs Cherry Mrs Smith and Mrs Marcheska of Los Angeles. Mrs Harp acted as hostess and Mrs Alice Hand won first prize while Dutch Dor tance took second. Ice cream and cake were served.

Mr Ross, member of the Board of Lectureship at The Mother Church in Boston, will deliver a Christian Science lecture at Third Church of Christ Scientist in Los Angeles on Thursday March 29 at 12 10 noon.
