Beal and camels lead Westward trek to California frontiers
The Barstow Printer presents the first installment of Dix Van Dyke’s history of General Renard Beal. The 1853 expedition from Westport Kansas to California, led by Beale, traverses the Santa Fe and Spanish Trails. The narrative covers Beale’s early career, Tejon Rancho, camel corps involvement, and the 1853 journey through Fort Massachusetts to the Colorado River region, including a dangerous crossing of the Grand River and raft construction challenges.
