California Prosperous Says Chamber of Commerce Report
The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce reports California in an era of unprecedented prosperity with shipbuilding on the Pacific Coast at high volume. It notes contracts closed and pending for steel and wooden vessels, large warship construction, rising passenger traffic, and diversions in trade routes boosting Pacific ports. Grain and fruit production across California shows strong values, with record bean harvests and substantial mineral and petroleum outputs. San Francisco bank clearings reach $4.84 billion, up sharply from 1916 and 1915, reflecting broader economic gains across the state.
