The first war measure of the 65th Congress authorizes bonds up to five billion dollars and passes by near unanimous vote. Reports note U S resolve to support the president’s WWI program and curb Prussian militarism.
The Mojave River Valley Red Cross sent a box to San Francisco on Wednesday containing pajamas, red shirts, bed jackets, red socks, bath robes and operating gowns. Daggett and Barstow knitters provided these garments, with Mrs B F Gouldin noting another box from Barstow knitters including sweaters scarves socks and wristlets.
Barstow residents attend local events and news includes Frank Ross Faulk home on leave from Fort Rosecrans thanking the Red Cross, Red Cross knitters meeting next Wednesday, visits from Los Angeles and Berkeley, a Desert wind storm benefit supper raising $60 for the Red Cross, and updates on Gene Haws and others. a farm bureau meeting and Conductor S D Sprecker’s appendicitis operation are noted.
Samuel Crooks of Barstow died January 1, 1918, at his daughter Mrs. N S Myers in Stockton. He was 67 and died of heart trouble. Interment was at Park View cemetery, Stockton. He leaves four sons C S Crooks J L Crooks B C Crooks and G A Crooks and two daughters Mrs N S Myers and Mrs T A Foster.
The Santa Fe reading room hosted two events this week for company staff. On Tuesday evening Mr Blood gave a lecture on the use of explosives, followed by a musical program by the Hall Concert Co of Topeka Kansas.
The Cattle Protection Board warns cattle owners to file brand recordings with the State Board in San Francisco by February 20 1918. After that date brands receive only secondary consideration and unrecorded irons may be prosecuted. District Attorney Duckworth of San Bernardino after a Needles trip stopped in Barstow on Saturday and delivered a Sloan's hall talk on food conservation. Despite unpleasant weather the well attended meeting heard practical points on how the public can aid the government by using recommended foods and conserving staples for the army.

Washington January 16 all industries east of the Mississippi including Louisiana and Minnesota will be closed for five days. Public utilities hospitals and public institutions are exempt.
