Medical Examinations Held in Barstow This Week

Barstow conducted medical examinations Tuesday and Wednesday for the 319 Engineer Division known as the Pioneer. Several men passed and enlisted via the Local Board. some will be entrained Saturday and others sent to camp on the 14th.

Potash Plants Expand Output To Meet Boost In Demand

The Trona company now outputs 2000 tons monthly with 64 percent chloride of potassium and 15 percent anhydrous borax at 150 dollars per ton and a net of 150000 dollars per month. Solvay, after a one million dollar start, ships 86 to 88 percent chloride of potassium and adds 300 tons monthly, rising to 30 tons daily. Nevada Chemical plans a 2560 acre lease to support a plant rivaling Trona, per the Inyo Register.

Desert Name for Avenue Protested by Residents

Householders on Fifteenth Avenue protested to the City Council against the name Barstow Avenue recently assigned by the city engineer. They say Barstow evokes desert imagery and is unsuitable for the city’s pleasant, arid surroundings. The Los Angeles Examiner notes Barstow’s tourist flow and cautions settlers against being misled by that naming. Joe Ward and H. Anderson have leased Sand Canyon strontium claims in Barstow.

Pershing Calls for White Chauffeurs and Cooks in Barstow

Superintendent Hyatt reports the second semiannual apportionment for elementary and high schools. Elementary funding uses average daily attendance of 348 304 with a per pupil rate of 7 66, up 7 cents from last year. Taxpayers who earned 1000 dollars or more in 1917 must file by April 1 1918. Married filers with combined income of 2000 or more must file by the same date.
