A sworn statement by First Lieutenant Leland I Jonas of the Bauer and Slaten Air Division asserts the May 8 1928 Barstow incident involved no plane failure. He attests Airplane 3885 was in first class condition after the crash and that Slaton and Arends were competent to fly, with heat and desert wind limiting instruction time as the sole reason for leaving employment.
