A barn and contents on Ray Redmon's Adams ranch burned at 2 a m on July 5 with a mule hay harness and a truck end damaged. Chas Raftery woke the family and the fire was limited by a quick response. Redmon had purchased the ranch this spring.
The All Stars of Barstow faced the Yermo boys in a grueling 12 inning contest. Yermo matched Barstow until the 12th when Joe Chambers singled to drive in the deciding run, giving Barstow a 3 2 victory and adding a prior homer by Chambers.
Yermo defeated Tourist Garage 13 to 4 on Thursday night. Yermo dominated the early innings, Barstow tightened the game, but Yermo pulled away in the final frame to secure the win.
Two cars collided head on near Barstow on Saturday night involving an Oakland and a Hudson. Miss May Sullivan, a Harvey House worker, was badly injured when one car crowded the other off the road.
Walter Couse leaves for a 60 day vacation. Mrs. Robert Greer travels to Reno for her mother’s illness. Tom Finley heads to Los Angeles to work as a clerk for Union Pacific. Mrs. Gaylor spends summer in San Bernardino. Gadberry residence bought by J. D. Van Otta. Mrs. Gadberry operated on in Los Angeles and doing fine. Harry Gregg couple spend Fourth in Los Angeles. Claire Gleason recovering. Bebe building three bungalows in the east end. Yerma needed. Tracy Steck sick, away at hot springs. Dr. McKinzee back on Union Pacific duty. Pool doing good business. Homer Ryerson buys Hardware property in Daggett, improvements made. Cupid active in Yermo. forthcoming weddings teased. Bud Gibson buys Chevrolet sedan, wedding ride. Mrs. Brezee and Mrs. Turner visit from Las Vegas. Yermo’s June marriages count four.
Mrs Gene Fayle and her daughter visited Barstow on Thursday while en route to Las Vegas Nevada. They formerly resided in Goodsprings Nevada and attended the Kiwanis luncheon as guests of George Henderson.
Inyo county officials and Tonopah & Tidewater Railway representatives selected a new connecting route about 12 miles southwest of Shoshone to link Silver Lake with Death Valley resorts. The realignment follows the Tonopah line for a stretch then climbs to avoid costly river-bottom maintenance, reducing desert road in San Bernardino county by about 15 miles with work starting next fall.
Mr. Butts left Barstow last Sunday for Big Bear Valley and reports a big season ahead. A large golf course and dance hall were completed. C. A. Whitlow and family returned from the Kiwanis Convention in Seattle along with George Cunningham and family. A July Fourth Community picnic occurred at Camp Cadiz with Newberry Daggett and Yermo in participation.
Mr. and Mrs. BE. W. Hokom and son Jan of Hollywood visit Mr. and Mrs. Phil Johnson for a few days. Mrs. Hokom is the Johnsons' sister. Mr. and Mrs. Louie Recappe drive from Los Angeles Saturday afternoon to stay with Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Teague over the weekend.
John Goslin, en route to Newberry for a Saturday night dance, was in a head-on collision near Daggett Saturday night. The other driver’s name could not be learned. Goslin escaped unharmed though his car was badly damaged.
Mr and Mrs R L Teague left Monday for a month long vacation. They plan to visit friends and relatives in the Angeles, Richmond and Santa Paula.
The Hinkley-Harper Lake county Farm Bureau gathered for a picnic in the grove at Dr. Ray Chapin’s home. W J Dewey led the meeting at 8 35 PM, with a rally set for September 18 at Hinkley Schoolhouse featuring a picnic, Washington pictures, officer elections, and other features. Topics included puncture vine quarantine, July 21 Dairy Day at Chino, TB cattle status, and apportionment bills affecting San Bernardino, Oakland and Los Angeles. About sixty attended.
Reece Dillinghame spent several days over the Fourth in Los Angeles with his fly and stayed at the home of Mrs. Dillam's parents Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Orner.
Mr and Mrs Joe Mulcahy and their family formerly of Bartow now living in San Bernardino returned last week to visit friends and relatives in the area.
The E. M. Haws ranch is leased to Dale Duncan a cattle raiser from Superior Valley. Mrs. Haws and Winnifred relocate to Los Angeles where Winnifred plans to enter Junior college this fall.
Mr and Mrs Otto Christiansen and John Cullian left Monday morning by auto for San Diego and Los Angeles visiting various beaches where they will enjoy a short vacation.
Miss Pearl Cressie and Mrs. E C Saunders along with Mr Saunders' mother, all of Los Angeles, spent last weekend in Barstow visiting friends and taking in local sights.
Mrs. H Johann visits her husband for a few days. Mrs. Rebecca Wixom hosts her sister Mrs. Gill from Visalia. Roadmaster Rae of the San San Bernardino division was in Barstow today.
Officers J. E. Farley and W. H. McCarver captured Charles Tillar of Woodsprings Nevada with 1 gallons of liquor in the hills near Sarstow. Tillar was arraigned before Justice J. P. Hoofman and pleaded not guilty seeking a jury trial while jailed awaiting trial in county jail.
Little Miss Troup of Long Beach visits her cousin Miss Nancy Gilham while Mr and Mrs Will Hargis spend last weekend at the A A True home.
Mrs M A Beimer entertained as house guests on Monday her friend Mrs W A Bloomer and her daughter Erma from San Bernardino.
Francis Mudgett hosts her little friend Helen Ford of Caliente Nevada as a house guest. Helen lived here two years ago.
California may be called the Switzerland of America according to the United States geographical survey. It lists 73 peaks over 13,000 feet and Mount Whitney at 14,501 feet, followed by Mount Williamson at 14,384 feet. The range sits near the Pacific with beaches nearby and Death Valley lies over 200 feet below sea level.
Daggett report notes a baby was born to Mr. and Mrs. Peal at their home this morning. The brief item confirms the delivery occurred at the couple’s residence with no further details provided.
Mrs Jack Potter departed on Wednesday for Pomona to attend the funeral of a cousin, traveling to join family for the services.
Mr and Mrs H L Miller travel to Berkeley for a ten day visit in the bay cities. Their son Wallace and his wife reside at 2685 Durant Ave Berkeley awaiting their hosts return.
State Railroad Commission orders Santa Fe railroad San Bernardino County and Public Works Division of Highways to construct a viaduct over the tracks in Barstow along First Street. Certified copies of agreement covering terms of installation operation and maintenance shall be filed with the Commission within ninety days.
San Diego will host a Western Aviation Progress Exposition from August 16 to 18 with 400 airplanes airborne simultaneously. The event, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and U S government air forces, features smoke screens, parachute jumps, and combat flight displays. Nearly 600 aircraft will be exhibited along with aviation accessories and air navigation aids, plus the dedication of Lindbergh Field on August 16 in a ceremony with prominent airmen and officials.
Pearl Bell and Don Campell of Daggett eloped to Las Vegas Nevada last Tuesday and were married. They telegraphed news to their parents from Las Vegas and said they were going from there to Denver Colorado.
Barstow Kiwanis Club president George Henderson detailed the International Convention in Seattle where 607 Californians attended. He traveled with Harry Mosier and families, by boat and car, and noted Kiwanis publicity for Barstow amid a successful indoor baseball drive funding the Boy Scouts building project.
Superintendent Tumblin of the Imperial Utility Corporation announces the water district pipe has shipped and should arrive by Saturday. The pipe will connect the new Bear Valley road reservoir to the water main on Main Street, supporting the ongoing system expansion.
A Venetian blind is proposed to divide the two rooms. Paramount Furniture Co states they have a beauty 10 feet 10 inches wide in stock for potential buyers.
According to E. H. Red Cross a Chevrolet salesman for Bauer and Slaton, two more people were happy this week with new automobiles. A W. Fletcher, garage man at Lenwood, purchased a new Chevrolet touring and state highway foreman Montgomery at Amboy has a new Chevrolet coach.
The Hodge brothers near Barstow maintain an attractive home surrounded by alfalfa and fruit trees. They praise the roadside alfalfa and plan to acquire additional land along the highway for seeding and expansion.
The Orchard car from Los Angeles rolled over 20 miles east of Ludlow. Mrs. Orchard suffered a broken leg and other injuries while Mr. Orchard had minor cuts from flying debris. The July 2 crash at 5 30 am was caused by a broken steering knuckle. They were hospitalized at Victorville.
Charles Tillar of Good Springs Nevada was arrested by Deputy Sheriffs J E Farley and W H McGarver of Victorville on a charge of possession of liquor. Officers say he had twenty one gallons of liquor brought from Nevada and distributed behind rocks. He was arraigned before Justice J P of Victorville Las Vegas es.
Barstow Branch of the County Free Library receives its regular quarterly shipment featuring fiction, non fiction and children's titles. Notable non fiction includes Howard Carter's Tomb of Tut Ankh Amen with photographs of treasures and cultural context. Fiction selections include The Green Bay Tree by Louis Bromfield, The Plains of Abraham by James Oliver Curwood, and Kitty by Warwick Deeping. A strong children's roster offers In Desert and Wilderness by Lemkiewicz and The Disappointed Squirrel by William Henry Hudson plus nature sketches appealing to young readers.
F A Leonard a candidate for superior court judge visited Barstow Wednesday with Ben Harrison and his son on their way to spend the Fourth in Needles.
