Improving First Street Opens After Bridge Washout

Road Foreman Doran began work this afternoon to improve First street after the Daggett bridge approach washout. The detour has redirected Arrowhead route traffic onto First street, which serves Mojave travel and local north south Barstow traffic.

Fund Drive Aids Barstow Flood Relief Effort

The Yermo Athletic Club hosted a benefit for Mississippi flood victims and handed proceeds to the Barstow Cross Chapter. Camp Fire Girls of Barstow begin canvassing homes tomorrow seeking 50 cents per residence for relief. Contributions listed include Yermo $50, Congregational Church $30, Allene Millard $5, Miss Mary Cook $0, and area residents totaling small amounts.

Forbidden Dumping Of Rubbish Along Highways

It was reported at the Chamber of Commerce that businesses houses and private parties dump rubbish along highways and on private property. It is illegal to dump trash on highways or private property. Arrangements were made for a dumping of rubbish over the river banks north and northeast of the rock yards. Travelers avoid the area. Barstow and approaches should stay clean by not dumping rubbish. The Tiernan property east of wh has dumpers facing removal or charges.

Woman's Wednesday Morning Club Meets in Newberry

The Woman's Wednesday Morning Club formerly the Fairview group gathered at Mrs. Reed's home, sewed through lunch with sandwiches olives pickles and salad, and celebrated Mrs Osborn's birthday with a decorated cake. A brief business session followed along with notes on members' travels and upcoming events.

Lunar Eclipse Draws Crowds In Desert Holiday Night

The moon's total eclipse appeared around 12:30 after a 10:45 start, witnessed by many in the desert on Tuesday night. Barstow visitors Bernhard Budds and Mr. Armitage of Los Angeles toured the Barstow garage earlier this week, Budds from Berlin drove an Austrian car. James McCue Heads East Then Oregon Visit

James McCue travels Tuesday to Boston to visit his cousin and plans to stay in the east for several weeks. He will later join the Powell family in Oregon during their summer trip north.

Runners Enter 480 Mile Coast Endurance Race

Mike Kirk of Manuelito New Mexico passed Barstow with three Zuni runners. They will compete in a 480 mile coastal endurance race along the Redwood Highway, claimed the longest endurance run on record. Barton-Witty notes the runners are likely around sixty, with grey hair.

Barstow Orchestra Receives Share of Box Office Receipts

Verdie Nielson and his assistants performed in the auditorium last night with the Barstow band sharing a portion of the receipts. The same orchestra played in Oro Grande on Tuesday. The Southern Sierras Power Company seeks Railroad Commission approval to issue and sell 1,218,900 par value of first and refunding mortgage bonds to net at least 88 percent of par, to reimburse treasury for prior capital expenditures.

Highways See Surging Travel To California This Year

Officials from the All-Year Club of Southern California report record motor tourist travel to California this year, with a 29 percent rise over 1926 by May end. Counts by the Agricultural Department and Automobile Club show 27,502 visitors through May 1926 and 36,185 through May 1927, with June and July expected to bring larger increases as schools close for vacation.

Gordon Taylor aged 18, son of G Cleveland Taylor, died at Ramona hospital San Bernardino after measles followed by brain inflammation. His father is general manager of Zenda Mining Calico. family moved from Bakersfield to Barstow last week. Also note Barstow Santa Fe baseball team claimed coast lines championship by beating Needles.

Endeavors of Barstow Prepare for State Convention

The Endeavors of Barstow plan to attend the State Co. E. Convention in Santa Ana June 22 to 26 drawing 2000 Endeavors from across the state. Intermediate Endeavors sending proof of age to Miss Eidth Ward by June 18 will receive free lodging at the Y M C A with sessions in nearby churches and outdoors.
