Former U.S. judges face forced retirement over graft fueling calls for judicial recall law. Steve Bedell announces candidacy for Supervisor against Butler, returning to Needles with support letters and plans to visit precincts before primaries.
Lubin J. Henderson deputy county clerk has new registration books. All who have not registered since January 1 1912 must register now to be eligible to vote. Affiliation changes are allowed now to vote in the primaries. Chas. Post county clerk brought a map of new voting precincts and authorized Henderson to assign voters accordingly. Old Barstow district is split into four precincts with details and map at Henderson store.
Absent from duty records show Geo E Butler missing many meetings over 1911 while Steve A Bedell announces candidacy for Supervisor. Bedell, long resident of Barstow, claims center district location will enable full attendance and good service. J T Auchinachie of Victorville assisted talks, A withdrew to avoid river split vote.
The Chicago Barstow well and Kra mer Consolidated well will resume drilling between August 1 and 10. Each has passed through oil-bearing sands and expects to strike a flow of high grade oil a little lower.
The California State Mining Bureau reports 1911 hydrocarbon production including petroleum, natural gas, and bituminous rock, excluding asphalt and refined products, with figures covering the state’s overall output for the year.
Workmen have nearly finished Barstow’s roundhouse and will start erecting machine shops to the west, with a 60 by 100 foot cement and brick shop set to precede a storehouse and other necessary buildings.
At the McCormick store in Otis top gold shows include a nugget about 80 dollars weight and many smaller pieces from the Alvord mine by J. B. Osborne and Walter Olivier. Lower grade ore is ready for milling. A road sand nuisance between Daggett and Otis may be oilled or clayed before the election. Frank Searight traveled to Los on business. A call to readers urges sending in a one dollar bill for six months of subscription.
Local items report E L White and wife visiting in Los Angeles, Hutchison couple in Los Angeles, Hewins family celebrating a birthday, a new girl born to Grant family with Dr Anderson assisting. Barstow events include a Saturday dance at 50c after a picture show and a baseball game against Barstow ball clubs. Additional notes cover travel plans, vacations along the coast, and local business moves including KE Waite moving to new quarters August 1. The piece mentions a Spanish wedding by Judge Wadley and several doctor and ranching notes from Barstow and Victorville.
Charles D. Raftery is named Registration Clerk at Hinkley. September primary registration closes August 3. A social dance at the pavilion Thursday was enjoyed by Hinkley residents. Mr. Dover reports killing five sidewinders in the past week near the oil camp where they are plentiful.
