Daggett Drivers Licenses Issued at State Inspection Station

Highway officers in Daggett begin issuing new drivers licenses at the state motor-vehicle inspection station. Inspector Lee Held and assistants accept applications and conduct exams, with a list of 35 questions for operators and chauffeurs. Applicants must pass 75 percent on the spot, and some questions test absurdities from the study list.

Water Company Extends Main To Serve Local Firms

The Imperil Utilities Corporation extends a six inch iron main south across the highway and a four inch main 450 feet east along the highway to serve Mitchell Garage Richfield Oil Company station and nearby firms. Foreman BE Adams and partner BE L Morris head the laying, as the city’s half million gallon reservoir provides ample water supply and pressure.

Substantial Improvements East Part of Town Barstow

Substantial improvements underway at the east end of Main Street Barstow. Richfield Oil Company is erecting a Spanish style service station near the Mitchell garage, adding several thousand dollars in investment and enhancing the National Old Trail. Foreman W B Swank leads Miller and Miller, with ties to past Barstow projects. Mr Swank has 25 years with the Millers and previously helped erect the Standard Oil depot here. B P Miller and Mrs Miller visited Barstow earlier this week and went on to Bakersfield for another station project.

Addition Practically Sold Out by Weld

A. J. Weld reports that the addition east of Seventh Street opened by Mr. Broan and himself has been almost fully sold. Some lots have changed hands several times. Homes built there have boosted Barstow, and a Boy Scout building now under construction will add appeal. The clay soil suits planting trees and shrubs.

Bringing More Milch Cows Into District

Warren J. Smithson, a Helendale dairyman, travels to Phoenix to buy a carload of tuberculin tested Guernseys Holsteins and Jerseys. He expects cows on his ranch by August 1 and plans multiple carloads to sell on liberal terms. Mojave River Valley offers room for thousands of cows. The Barstow cooperative creamery, owned by valley farmers and merchants, can handle more creamery products and secure a ready market.

George Herz and Company of San Bernardino submitted the lowest bid for constructing 18 miles of highway from Barstow to one mile east of Yermo. The bid amount was 169 695 dollars and 85 cents.

Plant crews await clay soil test to start oil mixing near Mannix

Dillon and Boles had their men ready at the plant near Mannix Wednesday to begin mixing the oil, but insufficient clay in the soil halted work. A clay soil nearby is being tested and work is expected to start by Friday under inspector guidance.

Beacon lights to rise at Richfield tower Barstow area

The beacon has arrived for the Richfield tower and will be installed soon. Chas Gibbs reports two tons of alfalfa per acre on his Barstow area ranch north and east of Barstow across the river. Jim O Halloran, formerly with the American Railway Express in Barstow and later with the motor vehicle department at the Daggett station, is now special officer for the Santa Fe at Needles. Bert McClary returned from a San Diego vacation and is back at his Barstow Gorge job.
