Southern Pacific unveils ten new giant locomotives
A grandfatherly comparison contrasts the old Southern Pacific No. 1 with ten newly placed oil burning giants on the Roseville to Sparks route. The single expansion articulated engines measure 120 feet long and weigh 906,900 pounds loaded with 112,760 pounds of tractive power each. The Mallet design keeps the cab in front to improve visibility and minimize smoke through tunnels and snowsheds.
