A sunken stone bridge anchored with wire is under construction across the Mojave River near Hodge to aid Hinkley ranchers crossing to the L A Highway and Victorville trade. Paving north of the river could revive traffic, while oil and borax notes hint at regional activity and future prospects.
Richard J. Barry of 366 East 58th street Los Angeles died Wednesday while traveling from Kingman Arizona toward Los Angeles after Christmas with the George McDevitt and Hand families. He suffered cramps near Barstow and collapsed on the running board. C W Keys aided, noting a feeble pulse and distended stomach. Barry, 47, an Oswald Company employee, was to be buried in Philadelphia per autopsy findings and burial plans.
A Victorville correspondent says 75 pairs of Chinese pheasants were released along the Mojave River at Rachona Verde Oro Grande and Yermo by W C Malone county fish and game warden. Some youths shot a few birds, and a heavy fine awaits anyone molesting or killing them.
Butler cites figures showing a doubling of cases over two years and notes 170 deaths in Christmas tragedies last week, framing concern over escalating fatalities and urging action.
It is reasonably certain two railroads will be built to Boulder Dam one from the WU P along the Muddy River at Moapa and another from Kingman. Extensions of the National Highway are expected to reach the Boulder Dam with one or more branch lines.

Explosion at Los Angeles power house kills one, injures two. King George near death as five doctors attend. Mrs O J Lemon of Pacific Grove visits Barstow for property interests.
Miss Nellie Cooper spent last week in Santa Monica with her friend Mary Bushnell. Mary Bushnell stayed several weeks here last summer as house guest of Nellie. Mrs Leland S Jonas is on the sick list this week.
Mr and Mrs Polus of El Centro spent Christmas holidays with Mrs Polus mother Mrs Kelly. Mrs Kelly is a partner in the Barstow home laundry.
Jimmie Rizzardini of Los Angeles spent Christmas with his parents and family. Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Bigger and Mr. Bigger's mother will leave Saturday for San Francisco to spend the New Years with relatives.
Tom Murphy of Ludlow spent Christmas in Los Angeles with his wife and plans to push the hard surfaced Daggett to Ludlow highway. He spends much time commuting between Los Angeles and his desert business interests and says the new road will greatly help desert travel.
Mr. and Mrs. A. C. McKinnon from Glendale vacationed in Barstow during Christmas at the home of Mrs. Tennie McKinnon and her son. Mr. McKinnon serves as president of the California Insurance Company in Los Angeles.
Emporia Kansas reports that Needles California high school students will compete in the Every Pupil Scholarship contest across Kansas and 24 states on January 8 under the general direction of E. R. Wood, director of measurements at Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia.
Ed Seymoure expanded his ranch water well from 59 feet to 140 feet, tapping a strong flow. He reports the deeper well provides ample water for all alfalfa needs and meets demand.
Mr and Mrs Jud Sanders traveled to Los Angeles for Christmas with their aunt Miss Carrie Coleman who had come to nurse Mrs Sanders sick with the flu. Coleman had homesteaded land near Lenwood in 1919 and is known to Barstow residents. The Sanders returned home on Christmas day.
Miss Dorothy Graham guests with her father Dr. John A. Graham this week and plans to return to Los Angeles for school next week.
Robert Newman, superintendent of the San Bernardino office of Southern Sierras Power Company, attended the Kiwanis Club gathering hosted by Harvey Mosier this week. He encountered Barstow resident R. M. McCron, an old-time friend, recalling past days in Chicago and Los Angeles.
Santa Fe switchman Scoty Kerr died after severe leg injuries from being crushed beneath freight cars in Barstow yards. A special 141 mile train to Los Angeles rushed Kerr to hospital, but he died at 4:30 am. He leaves a wife two sons and four children and will be buried in Mountain View Cemetery San Bernardino.
Mrs McCror celebrated a birthday last week at the Harvey House. A delightful surprise arrived at dessert with a small cake lit by candles placed before the hostess. The pink and white icing cake looked and tasted delightful, crafted by the dining room staff and the pastry man.
Frank Stanley a 25 year old miner died after a hoist bucket fell thirty feet in the Goldstone district. Chas A Zell of Los Angeles stopped the hoist after noticing the cable fault and found Stanley alive at surface but he died before aid. Coroner A W Ur en signed inquest papers. Relatives in the east had not been located.
Dr John A. Graham, his daughter Dorothy, Mrs Graham, Miss Cleora Lewis, and Al Pocock escaped a serious crash when their auto left the highway about fifteen miles west of Barstow on Christmas night. Dorothy was driving. brakes failed as the car wedged in sand after a wobble, a broken spring likely caused braking loss. Mrs Graham sustained a slight right arm injury. others unharmed. The vehicle was pulled back onto the road.
Early Thursday a Santa Fe fast passenger train No. 22 wrecked near Hesperia as three Pullman sleepers slid down an embankment. Thirty injured, no deaths. Assistant GM Buds Mackie and wife aboard. Mrs Mackie neck injury. Barstow crews, Los Angeles relief, and San Bernardino wrecker rushed to scene. Wreck blamed on stolen spikes and bolts, theft from tool house. Conductor James Scott and Engineer A C Long led the train.
Engineer Tom Fanatia on the lead engine of a Union Pacific holiday train near Kyle spotted an obstruction and halted the double header. A seven ton rock rolled onto the rails but the quick stop prevented a major wreck, though the pilot and beams were broken and the line blocked about four hours.
The American Legion of Barstow held a turkey shoot on Sunday drawing sharp shooters led by Ed Pitcher who took home Christmas birds. Another shoot is planned this Sunday with big birds as prizes and a bank book with a five dollar bank deposit to the winner.
A large flood control project with an estimated total cost around 230 million dollars will be presented to taxpayers in San Bernardino Riverside and Orange counties. The plan includes a flood control dam near Santa Ana and Bear creek junction, a pod control dam on Lytle creek, a large storage reservoir in Santa Ana canyon, and channel revetment to reduce evaporation.
