Barstow plans a two story hotel project with fifty rooms near Rich field beacon station. A. L. Doran handles cellar excavation and ground prep using a steam shovel two tractors and several trucks. General bids due by March 10 for a Spanish style hotel with basement, baths cafe and staff quarters costing about 80000 dollars.

Gravel is hauled to the O J Finke property opposite Barstow Printer as groundwork for the new Barstow Dry Cleaners building. The Mission style block will feature colored tile front, center show windows, two entrances, and two store rooms one for the cleaners. A. H. Pendleton and Frank Ryerse announce a partnership in Pendleton's Market and Grocery. $145 000 Viaduct to Open Across Santa Fe Tracks

The last steel span was installed on the Santa Fe viaduct stretching 1960 feet between end sills. About 1.25 million pounds of steel used, concrete sidewalk and roadway, three stair flights, 50 workers, and completion expected by mid May. State engineer W E Piper oversees as inspector. The viaduct links National Old Trails Arrowhead route with Bakersfield route at Barstow and ties into Barstow Yermo highway work.

Cement Block Making Machine Ordered by Local Contractors

Lacey and Jay, local building contractors, have ordered a new cement block making machine. It will operate on the lot owned by Chas. E. Williams at Third and Main. A sample of their work is shown at the cement brick residence in Lenwood. An advertisement for the contractors appears in the Printer.

Fred Hart began building a five room residence adjacent to his home on Hutchison Street this week. The foundation is in, and the new dwelling should show soon. Hutchison Street has been graded and sidewalks will be installed along its full length.

Miss Waterman to Receive Part of Brother's Estate

Dr James Sears Waterman died in Riverside at about 95 leaving a barstow sister Abbie Louise Waterman a $2500 bequest. The will filed in Kings County New York also earmarks $5000 to each of two sisters and Miss Helen Waterman of Berkeley along with three nieces from his late wife receiving $5000, plus annual income to Helen and the two sisters.

A second $40,000 expansion is set to begin in March at the Harvey House east wing due to heavy tourist demand. Previously a similar cost addition was added to the west wing, as travelers from Southern California to Death Valley prompted frequent sold out signs and eight to sixty guests turned away seeking other lodging.

Bridge Near Wild Will Advance Property Value

The state highway department plans a new substantial steel bridge over the Mojave river between Victorville and Oro Grande. The project, costing over 150000 dollars, will realign the northerly approach to reduce frequent accidents at a sharp curve and may transfer the old bridge to San Bernardino County for use at Wild. Pilot Kelly in Utah crash kin of local man

Fred Kelly, a Western Air Express pilot and cousin of St. George resident Engineer Harry Kelly, crashed in a mountain storm near St. George. He escaped death after being thrown from the plane, walked five miles, then rode to St. George and later to Los Angeles. Hospitalization expected two to three months for a cracked vertebra and injuries to his arms and neck. Mrs. Kelly met him at the field in Los Angeles.

Half Million Gallons of Oil for Highway

Fifty cars each carrying 10 000 gallons are arriving over the Santa Fe at Barstow for oiling the Barstow to Yermo state highway. The Standard Oil Company ships the oil from Martha station in the Bakersfield district.

New interlocking tower starts operations in Barstow

Last Monday the west Barstow Santa Fe interlocking tower, built over the past year, went into service. Contractors finished the tower last May and handed it to signal crews who installed new wires to the Santa Fe power house. The unit can handle twelve tracks branching to sixteen, secures west and main passenger tracks, and operates at the press of a button. Operators are Chas M Springer Oscar Lewis and Earl Gates on three eight hour shifts.

H L Miller proprietor of the Melrose hotel and Annex reports over five thousand dollars in upgrades including a heating and an air cooling system. The Melrose hotel claims to be the only desert hotel with air cooling, promising enhanced comfort for patrons. Barstow aims to attract travelers on national highways as a city of good hotels and tourist stops.
