Sybil Saunders, despondent over the forced hiding of her fiancé Jim Dallas who killed Homer Parkinson in self defense, is set to play Viola in a Gull Island charity production of Twelfth Night on the Maine coast. After the show, photographer Sally Shine discovers jealousy within the company as the troupe prepares to depart.
Joe Tracy departs to camp with Jimmy Travers near Bangor for twenty four hours then head for remote northern woods. Stokes changes clothes then hides inside his room as his wife and others plan flash photography and a cold supper. Miss Pinkney resists intrusion while Mrs Cornell coordinates, Shine gathers equipment, Bassett surveys the quiet house and views Hayworth and the girls through the channel windows.
On a remote island Bassett confronts Joe over an accusation that he used his position to spy on Sybil. Joe denies the claim, says he was simply checking mail and getting stamps, and calls Sybil unreliable as he defends his innocence amid tense revelations.
