Time to Remove Mulch From Strawberry Bed
In spring after heavy freezing and thawing, remove about two thirds of the mulch between the rows. Left mulch slows weeds, conserves moisture, and prevents sandy berries after rain. The removed mulch compacts between the rows during picking, helping moisture retention and soil condition for larger yields. Some growers mulch in fall or spring for the same benefits.
To Prune Successfully Is Difficult
The American Home advises pruning by leaving a shoulder on the trunk to avoid large wounds. Cutting above the shoulder creates a stump that decays the main trunk. When removing a large branch cut the lower side first, then top, and seal the wound with shellac in alcohol or tree wax. Tar and oil paints hinder new bark growth.
