Calmont Gold and Lead Mines Inc has secured a permit from Commissioner MacMillan to sell all capital stock. The company, with two San Bernardino county claim groups near Cadiz and Daggett, reported substantial development and an engineering study on the Gold Bullion group. The Barstow Kiwanis carnival last week was a financial and entertainment success. Over $300 was added to the treasury after expenses. In the popularity contest Phyllis Arends led with 8020 votes, Ruby Wilson had 7585, and Nellie Story tallied 5315 votes, helping raise $221.65 for the charity box.

Homer C. Ryerson of Daggett reported his store burned Tuesday night. Details of the fire cause and extent of loss were not learned. Ryerson kept a large stock and his loss is to be regretted. Bartow fire engine was used Friday night for a lime car fire in local freight yards.

Santa Fe completes line to compete with SP
The Santa Fe railroad finished laying 80 pound steel rails from Cadiz to Phoenix last Monday and can now meet Southern Pacific from Los Angeles to Phoenix. SP finished its main line into Phoenix in mid November. Santa Fe delivers freight in Phoenix 24 hours after leaving Los Angeles. The Cadiz cut off earlier used 60 pound rails and weak roadbed. New rails and ties improve travel quality as on main lines. Engineers Al Green and Hutchins and Firemen Steve Vihel and F. Hoxie, out of Barstow on trains 17 and 18, run Barstow to Parker, Arizona.

La Marsh Recovers Stolen Chevrolet
The La Marshs’ Chevrolet coupe was stolen from beside their home near 3 Dillingham avenue. A neighbor saw it at 1 am. the car vanished by 4 am. Santa Fe officers traced three vagrants at the depot, then evidence showed they were auto thieves. Farley of Victorville later informed of a coupe off the road, seen with strangers. Officers recovered the car at Victorville with La Marsh driving, thieves had left the keys in the vehicle. The couple is glad to have the car back though no theft insurance was carried.
