Lost Man Prompted Desert Search Near Haws
Constable Ed Harris received a wire Sunday morning about a man reported lost on the desert north of Haws. C H Cook and his companion Bill Gilroy hitchhiked from Las Vegas, separated at night, and Gilroy went back to read a sign. Dawn found Gilroy retracing his steps while Cook slept. Harris found Gilroy and Cook and returned them to Barstow where they bought Mojave-bound tickets. Mr Leavitt, longtime Yosemite superintendent, was remembered by many, recently transferred to Hawaii. He entertained visitors with crater lectures and moving pictures.
