Southwest Exposition features vast topographic map of Southwest

At Long Beach Pacific Southwest Exposition a massive map of the lower Colorado river basin spans forty two thousand square miles in minute detail. Prepared by sixteen surveying crews led by Chief Engineer William Mulholland, the map shows elevations, towns, the All American canal route, and Boulder Dam plans. It cost about ten thousand dollars and embodies years of work to provide an engineering view of the Boulder Canyon Project and its regional impact.

Hoover Accepts Nomination Broadcast Across Nation

Herbert Hoover will formally accept the Republican nomination before 90,000 at Stanford Stadium on August 11. NBC plans a massive national hook up with 46 stations and multiple shortwave links to reach the U S and world audiences. Governor Young and Senator Moses lead the program while Troover delivers a 45 minute acceptance. Also scheduled is the hanging of William Edward Wickman on October 19.

Emerson Dies While Trying to Save Co-Worker at Desert Mine

Lewis S. Emerson a longtime desert resident and rancher west of Barstow died Friday in a mine accident while attempting to rescue fellow workers Henry Zaftke and C V Mullenberg. They were sealing gas fumes from carbon monoxide as rescuers arrived with masks. Deputy Sheriff Farrey and others aided in recovery efforts at the Emerson mine near Victorville and Big Bear Valley.

Tourists From East Boost Barstow Travel in July

The Barstow area sees a continued influx of auto tourists from the east via the National Old Trail and Arrowhead routes. June traffic rose by 4,239 visitors from May, with July growth surpassing 1927 figures as over 100,000 eastern passengers have visited Barstow this year.
