Victorville news reports Jesse Bowles, a worker at Superior Service Station owned by Ralph Webb, shot during a late Wednesday attempted hold up as he returned to his Hawkeye Hotel room. He died from stomach wounds en route to the hospital. Suspects A N Mariette “Frenchie” of Los Angeles and companion Davis fled. Davis captured in LA but denies the shooting. Mariette remains at large. Whitcar family of Ithica, Illinois, has moved to Barstow.

California Fires Cause Major Losses in First Half Year

The Automobile Club of Southern California reports over 350000 dollars in losses from forest brush and grain fires in the first half of the year. About 200000 dollars comes from grain fires, with large outbreaks in unprotected districts. 133637 acres burned in patrol districts, mainly grass and grain. Careless smokers caused 263 of 626 blazes. A dramatic lightning storm sparked 30 fires in Badger Springs Crowder Flats and Devils Garden. The club urges motorists to drive with extreme care in the dry season.
