Alpha Chapter of Omicron Mu Chi held its first social function a bridge party at the Drumm Hotel hosted by Miss Mary Lynn and Miss Kathryn Drumm. Tau Tau Beta extended a welcoming message to the new group. Charter members include Kathryn Drumm Mary Lynn Ethel Prather Julia Spight and Marie Wickler. Barstow hosts a P. T. A. carnival next Friday and Saturday with a dime general admission. A waffle supper starts at 6 P. M. A free entertainment will be offered, but booths will charge for games and prizes, so bring coins.

University Examiner Praises Barstow High School Progress

Dr. FE Edwards of the University of California visited Barstow Union High School on Tuesday. He commended the faculty and students, predicted Barstow’s move from Class B to Class A on the accredited list, noted four of seven teachers hold master degrees, praised the Commercial and Home Economics programs, lauded Lulu Hodge’s oration, and endorsed the four point system as key to university readiness.

Aqueduct survey visit by LA group to Barstow

Twenty six visitors from Los Angeles stopped at the Harvey House in Barstow en route to the Boulder Dam site to inspect one proposed aqueduct route. The party was led by William P. Whitsett, chairman of the Metropolitan Water District board, and included district members, city officials, and engineers from Los Angeles.

Barstow merchants and property owners join a year long booster campaign with the Barstow Printer to advertise Barstow and the Mojave River Valley. The Kiwanis gathering included a full showing of merchants and farmers with twenty farming visitors. Ed Seymer chaired, Palmer brothers from Helendale with Miss Lynn performed, a four man quartet drew praise, and Mojave Valley Creamery manager Harry Moon outlined local dairy progress. Moon discussed diversified farming fruit from hay, semi monthly payrolls, pasteurized milk, cottage cheese butter and ice cream. W. H. Hartwick urged stronger farmer merchant ties with a list of attendees.

Barstow Prepares Kite Contest and Maypole Festival

Eleven schools in Barstow district join a Saturday program with kite flying contests at 9 5 and Maypole dances. Esther Williams leads the outer district Maypole setup while Mrs C Thomson heads the local program. Mrs C TL Garver and Mrs William Knages attended a Redlands meeting of the Contemporary Club on April 18. Juniors showcased work for visiting presidents and members, lunch for over one hundred was served, then guests toured Kimberly Crest and enjoyed Garden Week sights and flowering grounds.

Barstow Represented In National Oratorical Contest

A full house in Barstow saw Victorville and Needles students compete in a regional oratorical finals. Helen Cox and Lulu Hodge led Needles and Barstow entrants Betty Coombs Jimmie Wells Trelen Hoffman spoke well as six high school orators delivered persuasive pieces. Cox won first with Patriotism, Hodge second on Washington’s contribution, and Coombs third. Desert district hopefuls Cox Hodges and Wells are slated for Los Angeles eliminations.
