Barstow reunion after 23 years as daughter finds father

In Barstow the headline tale unfolds of C. J. Darrell reuniting with his daughter Lillian Storzbach after 23 years apart. The daughter, now 25, and her husband Jim had been living in El Monte, and after a Lenwood visit they plan to settle nearby. Darrell had lost track of his child when his wife took the baby east and later died, with letters and a Minnesota adoption tying the past to present. The surprise discovery came via the Motor Vehicle Department registration office revealing the missing daughter, leading to a joyous reunion and Darrell's remarriage and move to Lenwood.

Eighth Grade Pupils Stage Clever One-Act Plays

Eighth Grade pupils presented two witty one act plays at the grammar school auditorium under Miss Kathra Frank. The opening plot centers on a fur coat payment via dated exchanges with a few classmates. Cast members include Edith Copp Joy Harris Ruth Morris and James Weld with others. The second play Not Quite Such a Goose featured Evelyn Kerr Pat Morris Mildred Broad Abner Cunningham and Alma Braunzweig. Mexican ushers in native dress added color to the evening.

The Railroad Commission grants Harold G. Laub an extension to May 1, 1931, to begin distributing and selling liquefied natural gas in Victorville San Bernardino County under his certificate of public convenience and necessity. He states the plant cannot be completed by the prior deadline.

Bennett Subpoenaed in Bad Check Case

J R Bennett operator of a Martinez service station was subpoenaed to testify against James F Burke and wife. The couple cashed a $10 counterfeit Travelers check endorsed by Bennett. Police traced the counterfeit via the bank and photo, and the suspects are linked to about $75,000 in bad checks.

The Darrells who built their Lenwood home years ago and own a Texaco station started a new addition to their residence yesterday. Mrs. Darrell and her husband welcome Mr. and Mrs. Storzbich who travelled from El Monte to visit. Their garden of cacti along the highway is noted as highly attractive.

Three Traffic Officers Seriously Injured In Crash

Three State Motor Vehicle Department officers based at Yermo were in a morning crash near Baker while returning from Las Vegas. Joe Tuite suffered a severely injured nose, L L Kinspel had concussions, and Dave Morey possibly injured his back though not yet examined. The Ford coupe struck the highway shoulder and was thrown into a truck.

Stage Line Seeks Rehearing On California Auto Stage Route

Pickwick-Greyhound of California filed a petition with the Railroad Commission seeking a rehearing of its prior order denying necessity to operate passenger baggage and express service between Los Angeles and the California Nevada line north of Wheaton Springs and between Los Angeles and the California Arizona line east of Needles.

Durkin Taken to Los Angeles Hospital

Mrs. M. E. Durkin was taken to the Santa Fe hospital in Los Angeles today after ten days of illness at home. A wire was sent to her sister in Bakersfield to come help care for their eighteen month old baby Durkin. Mr. Durkin serves as chief clerk for the Santa Fe.

Conductor Ripple Killed in Airplane Accident

A. H. Pendleton of the Pendleton Ryersy firm notes the last trip by railway brakeman EB Ripple occurred May 26 1909 from Bagdad to Barstow. Ripple was killed in an airplane accident last week. During Ripple’s funeral, his Needles home and six neighboring houses burned. He lived in Barstow for two years before moving to Needles.

Yermo cafe owner takes own life

Arthur J. Staricha cafe owner in Yermo ended his life last Friday by shooting. His wife Jaredna had left him weeks earlier, draining part of the family bank account. Deputy Coroner Doyle of San Bernardino held an inquest with a verdict of death by own action. Funeral services were held April 15 at the Yermo church, burial in Yermo cemetery, arrangements by White and Platt of Barstow. Staricha was born March 9, 1885. his father Jacob resided in Austria.

Barstow Antler Club Hosts Card Party for Ladies

The Antler Club held a Wednesday card party with Bridge as the main diversion. Mrs Edward P Beahan and Mr Harry Hoskins topped the scores, each exceeding two thousand. Prizes included a silver salt and pepper set for Mrs Beahan and a leather billfold for Mr Hoskins as refreshments were served.

Speeding Buick Turns Turtle At Baker

Four Pacific Coast Tale Company employees returning to Silver Lake were injured when their Buick sedan skidded on a curve near Baker. Driver Tony Franco braked too late, the car railing and over the embankment. Mike Walker suffered skull and leg fractures and was taken to a San Bernardino hospital. Camilo Franco Raymond Johnson escaped with minor injuries. Tony Franco and another passenger had only minor bruises. Bud Dillingham celebrated a new Ford sport coupe.

Robbery at Texaco Station Near River Bridge

Jack Page of the Texaco service station at the forks of the Mojave Las Vegas highways was held up at 11 30 a m and the cash register robbed of 6 86 by two young men S M Johnson 23 and Richard Newmain 18. The bandits drove a 1980 Ford coupe 32 7073 north toward Barstow, were captured east of Yermo, and faced robbery charges in Judge Henderson's court after Deputy District Attorney Kavanaugh arrived from San Bernardino. Police pursued them after Page alerted authorities. Harris, Snedigar and Jenkins helped detain the culprits at Yermo. Officer Harris received praise for his work.

Woman in Distress Causes Nighttime Alarm at Boyd Home

A stranger entered the Jim Boyd home Wednesday with a shopping bag claiming danger to herself. She examined a toy pistol, asked about desert survival, and wandered to a cabin before being found at an aviation field office around 2 am. She was taken to Barstow and then San Bernardino for medical care.
