Norwich University opens with largest entering class since 1806

Norwich University Northfield opens its 4th academic year with 61 freshmen, the largest entering class since moving to Northfield in 1806. Total enrollment reaches 104. It is rumored Norwich may join six U.S. military colleges with regular officer detailing and two top graduates eligible for lieutenant exams.

Sunday School Work Adds Speakers at Vermont Convention

At Saxtons River on September 23 the Baptist state convention opened a second day with over 100 participants. Synoptic talks on current Sunday school needs featured Rev. Dr. O. Hi Spankling of Boston and Rev. C R B Dodge of St. Johnsbury along with E H McEwen of Vergennes Principal El Edgecomb of Derby Academy and Rev N B Lawson of Brattleboro. The morning session closed with Rev M Fuller of Burlington addressing Vermont as a field for Sunday School work.

Train Hold Up Near St Joseph Ends With No Cash

Four masked men robbed an express car five miles north of St Joseph Missouri on the Burlington line from Denver. They forced entry after a gunfight, blew the safe, but officials report no cash was taken. One robber was badly hurt in the explosion and the gang escaped.

Refunding to be Renewed Authorised by Secretary Shaw

Secretary Shaw announces renewed refunding operations to the extent of 20,100,000 due to the scarcity of two percent bonds for circulation and government deposits. He also authorizes redeeming five percent bonds maturing February 1, 1914, with interest through to maturity.

Post Offices Advance to Presidential Ballots

Washington dispatch reports advance notices in the United States for presidential ballots on October 1. Vermont locations include Stowe and Jennior Jones. The notice also mentions Mrs Frank W Plant daughter of James Ko Joned of Arkansas and chairman of the national Democratic committee, who died suddenly of heart failure at Deer River Minnesota while camping with her husband.

Waterbury Merchant Loses $700 In Store Robbery

A bold thief followed F D Gillett into his Waterbury store and, while Gillett answered a phone call, grabbed a bag containing money and checks totaling 700. Suspect described as short dark complected with black hair and mustache, recently from the woods, employed by Arthur Crandall at Bolton. Police search from Richmond to Jonesville and Montpelier, with possible flight to Montreal.

Rider Injures Spectator at Lamouille County Fair

At the Lamouille County Fair opening in Morrisville on September 22 W. G. McLintock on horseback charged a footpath, nearly striking two boys and trampling P. Leach of Bakersfield. Leach suffered a dislocated shoulder and injuries but is expected to recover as crowd unrest subsides and he is treated by Dr. Taber.

Admiral Hichborn Halts Runaway Horse Parade

Admiral Hichborn prevented a runaway in Ames on Saturday afternoon. A carriage with a girl stalled as the horse bolted past the house where he sat. He leaped from his seat seizing the bit, spraining an ankle but stopping the animal before harm occurred. The incident interrupted his Boston trip plans and will delay travel.

Golden Wedding Observed by Pittsford Couple in Home

Pittsford, Sept. 22. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Leonard of Pittsford celebrated their golden wedding at their home. The couple began housekeeping in the same house after their marriage in the village church 50 years ago. A large number of friends and neighbors visited through the afternoon and evening to extend congratulations. Mr. Leonard has operated a large farm in Pittsford and is regarded as one of the county’s most successful farmers.

In Northsie on Sept 23 a brutal assault left Mrs. Tramblee unconscious in her South Village home. The suspect, a junk collector named Martin, claimed to act for her husband who is jailed in Montpelier. The wounded 40 year old has two children and the attacker fled as searchers pursue him.

Knights of Pythias in Montpelier on Sept 23 held an excursion to Barre granite quarries with a special train. Major General James B. Carnehan arrived, a parade of uniformed Knights formed led by the Bellows Falls band, and commanders from St Johnsbury Hardwick Rutland St Albans Champlain Burlington Barre and Bellows Falls were in line. Aldermen clash over Boston contract letter

Alderman Currier wrote to Ex Mayor Babbitt in Fitchburg while Contractor Langefeld and Alderman Daity were in Boston. The mayor warned of tempers flaring as Alderman Duffy pressed to read Currier's letter about Langefelds contract with the city. Eastman Brothers founder William H. Eastman dies

William H. Eastman of Eastman Brothers died at his Wellington street home this forenoon after illness. A Barre businessman born in Westernville in 1835, he came to Maine in 1887 and formed Eastman Whitney and later Eastman Brow with his brothers. He is survived by his wife and two children. funeral Sunday at 2 pm at his home. Interment in Elmwood Cemetery.

Dover Man Killed in Somersworth Accident

Alphonso A. Cheney of Dover N H was instantly killed in Somersworth when a heavy wire struck him while he moved a piano from a summer theatre. He was a prominent Dover citizen and former councilman. He leaves his brother Lafayette Cheney of Washington and another brother Lieut P C J Cheney.
