Seventeen people died and property loss nears 500000 after a grain elevator fire at the Canadian Pacific railway yard in Richford. The blast destroyed sheds, cars, and a barn. many workers were trapped as flames surged through the wreckage. Rescue efforts and railway disruptions followed as investigators noted spontaneous combustion as the cause.
Governor Proctor urged abolishing the Court of Claims and reshaping state offices. He called for highway funding increases, a state forester, county examiner of teachers, state normal school building, and tighter supervision of banks. He urged a license board, charter law for savings banks, and elimination of the governor’s staff.
A burning grain elevator and flour mill on Broadway Buffalo owned by A Nowak and Son collapsed trapping eight others. one fireman died and several were injured as crews battled the flames for over an hour. Ernest Raymo, 15, arrested on a warrant charging larceny of a gold watch owned by Auguste Chatotte. Raymo, living near the Chatotte family, allegedly took the watch from the sink area while visiting for water and whittling. He is also linked to a recent shotgun sale but no charge tied to that claim. He was arraigned in court and the case postponed for grand jury review.
Dre A T Smith of Cheleen visited the city yesterday while W T Goodfellow traveled to Stowe on Howtes. Mrs Michael Renofick and Joseph were voted to Brooklyn. A death in the family noted. Fresh stock at Lyon's includes almonds and salted nuts with prices. A quilting party event titled Aunt Diab’s Quilting Party is announced for Friday night.

Constable and Mrs. Mark B. Nichols were honored with a surprise last evening by friends for their twenty year wedding anniversary. A Washington county court delivered a verdict for the plaintiff in the case of David Fewer vs. A Co Manchard, awarding 20 500 and costs after days of trial. The plaintiff alleged injury on June 3 2008 at a Barre Town quarry when a derrick mast fell, pinning him, causing the loss of a leg, and claimed the mast was insecurely fastened. The jury also heard a trespass claim concerning continued intrusion on the plaintiff’s property. The trial was concluded and sent to further appeal.
Leigh Cropell, wandering city streets with Niehen in a fearful state, was arrested on Granite Street and taken to City hospital by Cloivt Faulkner and Officer Hamel. A disturbance at Ale Fivexita required police, and Officer Gamble stayed with him overnight. He was later to be sent to the state asylum at Watertairy.
F. B. Platt, Rutland clerk, processed 100 naturalization applications yesterday and tonight in Barre and Montpelier, with 71 second papers and 29 first papers. Italians led with 32, Scots 20, others from Canada, Sweden, England, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Norway. Barre City produced 61 applicants. Blanks ran out, new session planned in Barre.
