The program proceeded as arranged with the day’s sole contest the election of the house chaplain. Hoth branches adopted joint rules. Senator Ei Hlinn of Windsor said he resigned as a judge and plans to introduce a bill to disband the court entirely. The afternoon included selecting seats for members of both branches.
The Vermont legislature completed its organization and opened the biennial session with Cheney elected Speaker of the House after a brief chaplain contest. Five candidates ran for chaplain. Rev A J Hough of Montpelier won on the second ballot. Delegates prepared for immediate work as Governor-elect Prouty’s inaugural address looms.
Chiengs Oct. 7 Taft spoke at the Ia land Waterways convention pledging a generous policy to improve rivers and lakes. He urged treating lakes to the gulf and Ohio Missouri river projects as one great enterprise, with bonds or other funds to complete them, while criticizing Congressional delay. President William K. Kavanaugh opened the convention with about a thousand delegates including governors and congressmen.
In Rutland Vermont a 13 year old, Charlie Forrest of Proctor, was ordered placed in the state Industrial School at Vergennes for the remainder of minority after stealing a horse owned by Dr Hanrahan. Prosecutors said Forrest claimed no intent to steal but was misled by a stranger offering a dollar. His father William Forrest, a wood chopper, accompanied him earlier. the incident occurred on Center Street and West Rutland after a night walk.
New York October 7 The Mayflower with a cargo of sunken treasure is reported to have wrecked crew saved by the Advance. The rescued crew, all college men including Stephen Noyes Corbett Buck Harrison Roger Derby Harvard and Gordon Crown, are being taken to Baltimore Harbor aboard the Hippolyte Mumerry.

The bureau of tours of the Automobile Club of America abandoned a planned scenic tour to Manchester and the Berkshires due to the closing of miter hotels along the route.
