The Great Peace Conference formally began this afternoon with a speech by President Poincare of France. The American delegation met without President Wilson, who stayed at the Murat Mansion all morning to rest and prepare for the main conference.

Paris reports say the supreme war council adjourned with a plan for five secret sessions weekly while one open session remains. Min press reps agreed to press for more publicity in congress. another meeting for prose reps is set. Wilson led vigorous discussions with British delegates, urging fullest publicity within war aims.

Investigations proved the accusation against Charles Humbert false. Yonkers New York January 18 A jailed man Patrick Donnell 30 confessed in court today to killing 17 year old Elizabeth Mary Riddell in Queens with an iron bar after she fought him. Detected after being held on vagrancy charges he repeated the confession to a magistrate stating the fatal attack occurred Wednesday night as she walked home from work near a Manhattan insurance office. Also reports Burlington high school won a close 17 16 basketball game over Waterbury with Cleric and O Brien scoring for Waterbury and Harrington leading Burlington’s offense.
In the Bord Newberry Michigan pecatorial elec tion contest the Senate elections committee ordered the sergeant at arms to take custody of all ballots poll books or other documentary evidence to be held for future examination. An immediate investigation is not planned.
Washington January 15 World War I detail lists assignment to early convoy home from France of 250 officers and 1 500 men including the 11th engineers the 372d infantry medical department and second battalion with the 16th engineers and third evacuation ambulance company bearing the roster of units and officers in the staged flow home.
New York dispatch reports the American Steamship President Grant and the battleship South Dakota arriving with large troop contingents. Coast artillery units from Connecticut plus aviation and infantry detachments total over four thousand men, many headed to Camp Mills and Camp Merritt.

Mrs. Maria Lee Demaling wife of Robert Flewelling of Boston and daughter of Roy and Mia Ki Lew of St Johnsbury died Friday in a Boston hospital of influenza. The body will be made here for interment. She was 27, attended Compton College Quebec St Johnsbury Academy and a Boston business college. Married two years ago she is survived by her husband one daughter her parents and a brother Edward Lew an architect of Pittsburgh.
Cuban chess master Jine Reoul Cay Waren played twenty four games simultaneously at the Illinois Athletic Club tonight and won every game. The event drew local enthusiasts and showcased strong play from the visiting grandmaster.
In St Johnsbury Vermont 52 year old farmer John Curtis was fatally injured when a horse driven by him became frightened near his home. He was thrown against steps, struck his head and died minutes later. He had injured his right arm previously and lived in Waterford and Passumpsie with his wife. Funeral will be held Monday.
