President Wilson told Manchester that America seeks a world peace through a partnership with Europe, not a balance of power. He urged a genuine concert of mind and purpose, a flexible readjustment machinery, and the universal mandate of humanity to guide settlements. He arrived with a democratic reception and toured Manchester’s dockyards and factories, stressing friendship and practical cooperation.
In Go Dlenz and other occupied towns the rising number of unemployed men causes American anxiety. An official count shows about 500 idle laborers and 350 skilled workers without jobs. Unemployed men receive a daily bounty from the city, while offers of four marks a day draw few takers against a six mark standard. Efforts aim to restore prewar roles, with women filling gaps if needed. The War Department announced Private Jo Lahti of Graniteville VI is wounded with undetermined degree after previously being listed missing. Lieut. George I. Brooks of Montpelier VI and Private William R. McNamara of Charleston VI, who were also reported missing, have returned to duty.

The American transport Tenadores carrying 305 crew from the Navy Department was stranded off Isle d Yeu near Tele d veu in the Bay of Biscay after leaving New York December 18 for Brest. Rescue efforts are underway as officers and crew, plus Italian soldiers and wounded, are being evacuated. authorities believe the ship may be salvaged.
St Johns Newfoundland Dec 10 The steamer Gracianna, bound to arrive today, has gone to assist the steamer Caryh reported in distress about 800 miles off. No further word has been received as the night’s message described the Caryh’s stern motion and a ship’s captain Loren reported rough seas and a shifting deck.
The Vermont Legislature assembles in Montpelier on Wednesday January 8 and will immediately organize. A joint assembly will revive the retiring Governor HF Graham’s message the next day. On Friday WP Clement will be inaugurated as governor and the inaugural address will be given. An Army ball and reception follow at Montpelier City Hall attended by Governor Clement and state officers. Coltles Gravesington, a former legislator and draftsman, arrives to begin duties. The second draftsman is FO Cheney of Morrisville.
The funeral of Hiram Matott, who died at his Prospect Street home Thursday night, was held Sunday at 1 p m in St Monien’s Church with Rev Fr P M McKenna officiating. Burial followed in the Catholic cemetery at Websterville. Attending out-of-town friends included Napoleon Rabideau of northern New York, Leo Duquette of Hemmford, V Q, and David Dombard of Portland, Me.
Deputy U S Marshal served juror notices today on Montpelier residents including J M Bentwell WB Torney LC Stone F L Huntington Mo Heaton BE Fisher and Alfred Doucette ahead of January 8 federal court term in Montpelier for cases to be tried.
Juiston Holt was among passengers on the Malti awaiting departure for Paris peace conference duties. He becomes the first official representative of the league to go abroad on this mission, joining S. Strauss and other peace congress committee members expected to sail in January.
Alexander Milne was thrown from his automobile as a Barre & Chelsea railroad locomotive struck the car at Circle Street crossing. The driver escaped serious injuries, though the vehicle was heavily damaged and the incident caused a brief halt as train crews assessed the scene.

Louis L DeBlois a Barre granite manufacturer died at 13 Maple Avenue after years of ill health. He was married in St Johnbury April 26 1904 and leaves nine children, four brothers, two sisters, and many friends. Born November 11 1871 in St Margaretre he worked as a granite cutter then in Barre for 15 years. Funeral planned at St Munic h Church with Rev McKenna officiating. burial in St Johnbury.
Bolshevik forces seize Vilna, the capital of Lithuania, a severe blow to peace efforts. The seizure is reported in dispatches from Petrograd via the Mail, citing Soviet sources.
East Highgate Vermont faced a shock as William Cruz, a Rixford Manufacturing employee, died after being found near a highway. An inquest led by State's Attorney McFeeters examined a possible altercation with Drinkwine before the body was recovered and transported for post mortem.
