Bombs strike Philadelphia homes of a judge, police head, and a prominent businessman. Occupants were hurled from beds but none seriously injured. Pamphlets on the street threaten judges, policemen, priests, and soldiers. Nearby streets cordoned as authorities probe the assault and disseminated warnings.
A blast caused injuries and prompted rapid security measures as the house occupants including a woman, three children, two maids, and others were asleep. Several adjacent buildings were hastily put under guard amid the incident.
A series of shrapnel bomb explosions rocked Philadelphia injuring no one seriously and damaging homes of Justice Von Mosehzinker, Acting Police Superintendent Mills, and Ernest T. Trigg of the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. A suspect, John Lafferty, was detained as authorities probe the attack said to target judges and police. Authorities fear further blasts and guard residences of prominent officials while evidence including pipe fragments and shell remnants are examined. The incident coincides with war-era tension as police and federal officers tighten security citywide.

Secretary Daniels asked the naval committee to provide a temporary increased naval personnel of 250,000 for the year starting next July. He urged transferring 1,000 officers from the reserve to the permanent establishment and making war time pay increases permanent, boosting enlisted men pay by 80 to 210 a month and raising overall pay to about 51 a month.

In the U.S., Wiltnr Lowe of Waterbury was arrested in Barre on charges of escape from an officer and related mortgage fraud, with a hearing set in Barre City court after authorities chased him to Boston.
Boston and Philadelphia boxers figure in a fatal ring accident. Terry Mellovern known as Frank Di Leo died at City hospital after a sixth round knockout by Frankie Britt of New Bedford. Britt, real name Frank Pacheco, 23, was arrested for arraignment. The bout was Britt’s 28th in 1918. Mellovern held the New England featherweight title in 1916 after defeating Al Delmont in this city.
Reports from Geneva and London describe unrest in the Ruhr valley coalfields of Westphalia Germany. Armed strikers attacked soldiers guarding two mines, damaging equipment before authorities restored order and workers were compelled to resume duty. Field Marshal von Hindenburg reportedly wired German industrial leaders about Britain’s occupation of Berlin.

Washington December 31 General Pershing informed the war department that about 15000 additional troops have been assigned for early home service. The units include the 220th and 230th infantry of the Sid division with over 50 officers and 4400 men each and the 4th regiment air service with about 16 squadrons. Talks with Premier Orlando and Admiral Thaon di Revel on Adriatic issues are expected to clarify claims and mutual protection.

Private John Bottaro, from Barre, died of wounds received in action in France, after leaving Barre with the first draft for Cayons. He was 22, worked as a granite cutter, and had relatives in Barre and Italy. The family was notified by a War Department telegram.
Milford C Veino dies at his Barre home after a long illness. He is survived by widow Linma Bailey prior to marriage, four children Nation M Veino Watervliet Arthur N Veino US Navy Roger C Vein and Miss Kiva M Vou of Barre, two sisters Mrs BR Veino Lawrencetown and Mrs L S Grant, a brother Adolphue Veino and a half brother. Born in Nova Scotia in 1903, he lived in Baye Town prior to retirement, respected in Cobble Hill Grange. Funeral Thursday at 2 pm from his home, interment Hope Cemetery.

A Haverhill man, identified as Ernest Bottomley Wea, was found dead at the bottom of an elevator shaft in a Broadway Central hotel. Police say he fell from a sixth floor window during the night. the home address is listed as Haverhill, Massachusetts. The note notes uncertainty in the name and details as reported.
