President E C Branson led the opening exercises as 225 pupils attended chapel at Gordon Institute with 60 new students. The enrollment is expected to reach 300 and may rise by about twenty five percent from the fall term. Teachers and hundreds of pupils started work promptly, and many former students re entered.
Miss Lola Milner now boarding with Capt. B. M. Turner falls in with Gordon Institute updates. Rev. W. T. Godard occupies Wellons house on Brown avenue. Emmie Means visits Miss Louie Summers at a gathering. Mary W. Lovelace sang at the Spring term opening. Barnesville aims for a prosperous 1897 with civic praise for Mayor Huguley. Baptist Sunday school officers elected. Turner declines re election. Frank M. Stafford ill with hopes of recovery. Drs. M. A. and B. J. Clark announce new Murphey building offices. Holiday deaths include Mrs Bankston, John Williams, and Celia Fielding. undertaker Summers handles burials.

Milton W. Smith and his family will move to Barnesville from Griffin around January 15 due to the enlargement of Jackson G. Smiths business. Until a new home is erected they will live in the house of Jackson G. Smith.
Mrs. John Hunt of Milner is building a small neat cottage on Ann street to be completed in a few days. She and her family will move in next week. This is the fourth new house on Ann street in the past year.
The Misses Musgrove from Columbus Georgia have bought the lot between Col J J Rogers and Mrs Reynolds on Thomaston street. They have contracted C H Morris to build a five room cottage home. Materials are ordered and work will begin at once. The location is good and the project should enhance that city area.
Major changes underway at the J. C. Collier Co. building with a large workforce rearranging the four-store operation on two floors. The firm will carry nearly all goods except drugs across the mammoth department store, with full department locations to be announced next week.
