Barnard Bulletin discusses the upcoming University schedule for 1903 04 and its promise of broader work and brighter possibilities after 1903. It emphasizes shared responsibility to maintain college spirit and dormitory life as changes unfold.
The Barnard College year closes with steady progress led by the Rockefeller fund securing financial stability. New student groups include a Debating Club a Glee Club and the Barnard Bear while the campus faces a need for new dormitory and expanded non resident space due to crowded conditions. The loss of Fiske Hall affects social life and the Ella Weed Reading Room remains too small prompting calls for additional quiet study space and a separate reading room to relieve crowding.
The 1903 view from Barnard notes no campus dormitory or gym next year, with plans for a new dormitory and partial share in a new gym facilities in the year following.
The Department of Physics will move to the second floor of Fiske Hall next Fall and add an amphitheatre style lecture room a three horse power electric motor a dark room for photo development and a spectroscope moved from Fayerweather to Fiske Hall for setup.
Since last week one 1902 member will take Civil Service exam three joined domestic science at Teachers College and six expect to teach Miss Elizabeth Coddington 1902 named Honor Student at Teachers College and will teach Latin at Horace Mann School next year
The Biological Department will stay on the Milbank and Brinckerhoff top floor with a new office, physiological laboratory, and lecture room. Mrs. Frederick S. Lee donated $100 for physiological appliances, and another student contributed $500 for a similar purpose. Prof. Crampton will teach diving next summer at Woods Hole Marine Laboratory.
Students should bring registration books when meeting committee members to arrange courses of study for the next academic year.
All who have not paid undergraduate dues should do so at once as money is needed to meet the expenses of the play.
The Electoral Board of the College Settlement Association, including Barnard as a chapter, approves $400 more for a fellowship next year, bringing total fellowships to two for research in social reform. Scholarships of $300 annually exist at settlements in Boston New York and Philadelphia for training settlement workers. Mt Ivy, the settlement summer home near Tuxedo, opens soon with expanded capacity. Miss Robins invites inquiries for two week or longer visits to help supervise and amuse visiting children.
In 1902 a meeting last Thursday chose Ruth Earle as treasurer for five years and recorded Berkeley as the site. A motion passed to post marks for the senior theses on the bulletin boards.
Results of the May 1 elections list Vice President E M Pool, Secretary Jean H Loomis, and junior executive committee member Caroline Lexow as the elected officials.
