New Look for Royan Amid Postwar Rebuild Drive

The French town Royan, wrecked in 1945 bombardments, remains largely ruined with 9000 residents in makeshift dwellings, 13 schools and 4 churches destroyed, 1193 children in unheated temporary schools. A relief drive by Columbia Spectator begins March 15, urging donations of clothing to aid reconstruction and comfort residents.

Columbia University Student Council and the call for student support

In May 1947 Columbia established the Columbia University Student Council to foster cooperation and represent students in relations with faculty. The Barnard Spanish Department staged Jacinto Benavente’s Los Intereses Creados with puppets in an imaginary city. Prof Angel Del Rio starred as Crispin with an ensemble delivering harmonious, symbolic roles and notable set design by Fernando Texidor and Arthur Canter.
