Barnard College announces its semi weekly student publication produced by the Undergraduate Association. This Friday issue dated April 12 1935 appears during the regular college year schedule and excludes vacation periods.
The University strike against war will be held at 11 o'clock with Barnard students joining the protest. Letters to the editor reflect mixed views on tactic and effectiveness while urging unity to show a clear antiwar stance and remind readers of Barnard’s enduring spirit amid upheaval.
Vacancies exist on the About Town Staff with tryouts announced. Drama, movie, art and music reviews may be submitted to Rita London via Student Mail as soon as possible.
Miss Selina Wiegel, Director of Health in East Harlem, spoke to Lutheran, Wycliffe and Episcopal clubs about the East Harlem Health Center. The center, a Health Department subsidiary started as a Red Cross demonstration, includes 21 nursing, welfare and health agencies. It aims to prevent disease with posters, school exhibits, health foods contests and community cooperation, with clinics for dental venereal disease and tuberculosis. plans for a new building to house all agencies are underway in the 91st to 129th Street area.
On Monday afternoon April 15 at 4 30 several tap folk and modern dance classes host an informal Dance-Together. Each group will present semester problems and studies with unfinished but interesting modern pieces and simple folk dances. Spectators welcome.
The Empire Theatre presents The Old Maid set from 1830 to twenty years later. Judith Anderson and Helen Mencken deliver strong performances as rival women shaping the daughter’s fate, while other cast members bring mixed realism to a play praised for character-driven tension over melodrama.
The Dominant Sex is an uninteresting play with competent actors at the Cort Theatre. Michael Egan’s story of two young couples evolves from carefree companions to respectable married life, but the piece fails to deliver social insight or humor.
Young American violinist Jacqueline Salomons headlined at Town Hall on a Tuesday evening April 9 with Vitalii Chaconne and Glazounoff Concerto in A minor plus Franck sonata for violin and piano. The program closed with Stravinsky arrangements from Firebird and airs by Wiener accompanying Pier Lambosh at the piano. Salomons earned applause with encores though critics noted overdriven tone in the Chaconne and Concerto's high passages, while her Franck sonata and overall technique drew praise from reviewers.
In the last issue Alsop's article on Page 3 is corrected to read "T peace" instead of "peace" with the Anti War context. The erratum clarifies the intended phrasing and reflects the change in our publication.
