Governor Philipp declines as picnic speaker at Lodi event

Baraboo Valley M W A and Royal Neighbors cancel plans for Governor Philipp to speak at the June 7 picnic in Lodi after his stance on the Evjue referendum bill. The committee cites his attitude as intolerable and seeks legal guidance on funds for the Baraboo highway project.

Musical program by grade pupils at city high school

A Friday assembly program features all grades one through eight. The program includes Court of Old King Cole, songs on play adventure nature and service, The Walrus and the Carpenter, and the operetta Sylvia. Mrs. Georgia Hyde directs. Mr Jenke's Boy Scouts participate.

Baskets Sell for Big Price at Evangelical Social

The Thursday evening sale at the Schoephoerster home raised 72 dollars for the church fund. The top lot, a basket, brought over 5 dollars with T Clavadatscher of Baraboo as auctioneer. Miss Cummings must secure a new location when her lease ends in November.

No Pave Road to Lake Funds Tangle

The $40,000 bequest from W. W. Warner to Baraboo for a road from the high bridge to Devils Lake will not be used this year. The will directs transfer to Baraboo town, which lacks authority to use funds in city limits or state park, blocking project.

Grant Town Road Permit Approved for Baraboo Paving

At Thursday’s council meeting Baraboo received permission to spend part of the W. W. Warner estate funds. The city will designate a street linking the road to Devils Lake for paving. Baraboo expects $40,000 from the Warner estate and will pave a connecting street, with dogs restricted during garden-making.

Court examiner H L Halsted heard Mrs Gustave Pillep seek $1167 for care and board of her mother in law Dora Pillep who died in Sauk county. Four heirs listed. Mrs Pillep lives in Roxbury Dane county.

German Baron Turned Over As Deserted U S Aviator

Federal officials in San Francisco announced that Baron Friedrich Fels alias Lieut Frank Fels alias Frank Wolf is a deserter from the United States aviation corps. He was arrested May 10 and turned over to military authorities in San Francisco.

Bound Over in 10 Circuit Court Case

Paul Wolkowski and Charlie Anderson were bound over to the September term of the circuit court by Justice Adolph Andre for allegedly taking aluminum and other junk from Feinberg Brothers stored at the Reuland blacksmith shop. They will likely study old metals while jailed.

How to Answer the 1917 Draft Registration Questions

Instructions for men aged 21 to 30 registering on June 5. The registrar writes responses in ink at voting places. Applicants provide full name, current permanent address, date of birth, citizenship status, place of birth, current occupation, employer, dependents, marital status and race, prior military service, draft exemption grounds, and related details with precise wording and supported by a paper birth date if needed.

Carpenter Temper ance Bill Advancing in Wisconsin Assembly

Assemblyman George Carpenter of Baraboo introduced a temperance bill in Madison, seeking a wartime liquor ban with strict penalties. The proposal would outlaw sale and possession of distilled liquors with limited exceptions for medical and scientific use, and imposes fines and jail terms for first and subsequent offenses. It also enables license revocation for violators and takes effect upon passage.

In a 45 to 42 vote the Wisconsin Assembly blocked Governor Philipp's whiskey sale ban after July 1 1917. Assemblyman George Carpenter of Sauk County authored the measure. The bill needed 58 votes to introduce. Evjue Woodard and Peterson led the pro side while Hansen opposed. The issue moves to a Senate committee. A separate federal case over intoxicants against William Buckley heads to La Crosse on May 31.

Farewell for Episcopal Rector at Trinity Church

At the parish house of Trinity Episcopal church a farewell was held for Rev. C. A. Wilson who leaves at month end for Oconomowoc. Superintendent A. C. Kingsford and H. Grotophorst spoke as Rev. Wilson expressed gratitude and regret. The church has grown under his decade of service and members honored his work. light refreshments followed.

Junior Prom Unique Event Captivates At School Gym

The annual Junior Prom featured three scenes titled Your Flag and My Flag. The program opened with Civil War camps and camp songs, included a colonial garden party with Jefferson Madison Franklin and La Fayette, and closed with patriotic tableaux led by Uncle Sam and the Goddess of Liberty. Misses Wright and Gamble guided the event.

Spring Green Youths Enlist for Infantry Service

William Dickerson of Spring Green and Jesse Hudson of Spring Green have enlisted in the infantry after traveling to Madison for the purpose. Ray Holly of Helena also enlisted and has departed for Jefferson Barracks in Missouri.
