Gifts listed to Sauk County Historical Society collection

The Sauk County Historical Society received numerous donations including Mrs. Fannie Wilhelm’s shell and relics collection with rare Confederate money, and items from Arthur Clark, Joseph Rabuck, Frank Niles, F A Cooper, Miss Florence R Farwell, T Clavadatscher, and others. Also received are directories, books on war and peace, historical artifacts, and a tailor’s goose from the old Roberts site.

Hudson Couple to Wed Before Sailing to France for War Work

Miss Helen Kermott daughter of Dr and Mrs E P Kermott of Hudson will marry Wilder Penfield also of Hudson a former Rhodes scholar at Oxford and hospital worker in Paris. They will sail June 9 for France where she will do Red Cross work and he will serve in hospital duties. Penfield survived the torpedoing of the Sussex in March 1916 and did ambulance work in France after leaving Oxford.

Despondent Wisconsin Woman Ends Own Life

On Wednesday in Fairfield Mrs. Thomas Barrows shot herself through the heart. She had been ill for some time and was despondent. The family resides on the bank of the Wisconsin river, formerly Merrimack. Mrs. Barrows was about 36 years old.

Iowa-born woman Lavina Drown, mother of five, buried Friday

Lavina Drown, born in Iowa and wife of a husband not named, leaves five children. Her funeral is to be held with burial at Merrimack on Friday.

Forest fires blaze in the north region

Forest fires continue to burn in the north forcing residents to flee to Duluth and other nearby areas as authorities battle the blazes and assess evacuation needs.

Iowa to Enforce Blue Sunday Closures Statewide

Attorney General Hadner directs all county attorneys to enforce the Iowa closing law next Sunday. Polk County reported 100 arrests last Sunday for playing professional baseball operating moving picture shows selling popcorn cigars and other Sunday activities. Des Moines cigar and drug stores and refreshment parlors were closed and will remain shut next Sunday if enforcement continues. Baseball players club owners and theater proprietors arrested last Sunday appeared in Des Moines municipal court on Thursday.

Hazing at Wonewoc High Nearly Fatal Freshman Ordeal

Expulsion is expected for several junior boys after heaping abuse on Russell Carter freshman before they attempted to hang him in the gym. Carter, faint and nearly unconscious, was rescued when the hazing was discovered and Professor Stillman alerted.

The Baraboo Marine band is engaged to play for the M. W. A. picnic at Lodi on June 7. Miss Jensmore’s Columbian Orchestra will provide the evening entertainment.

Sharpers Are Too Sharp For Him

Carl Christianson of Gallishaw Alberta Canada traveled from Hot Springs Arkansas through Chicago to Minneapolis wiser but poorer by 20000 dollars. In Hot Springs he shared a room with Stafford of North Dakota and found a wallet with papers deposits and a 75000 bond. They found the owner Ludwig a New York stock exchange field agent who rewarded their honesty by sharing a possible scheme. Christianson collected 110000 but waited for 20000 he had invested to clear. He now offers 200 reward for each arrest of the slickers.

E C Alsmeyer, returning from the Rio Grande valley, argues Mexicans are misread in the U. S. He describes Mexican labor in onion farming, wages around six cents per crate and about five dollars weekly, and notes Mission Texas has a 3000 Mexican population with a separate schooling system up to eighth grade before high school. He contrasts mining districts’ rough conditions with calls for education to enlighten the Mexican community.

A government egg inspector visited Hillsboro dealers and directed them to candle their eggs. He supplied candlers and warned that the law would be strictly enforced with prosecutions for selling bad eggs. Applies to all egg sellers and chick traders.

Man fined for drunk driving after barbed fuel mix mishap

Adry Brattrud of Madison toured Baraboo to show a truck and mixed Kentucky flavoring extract with gasoline. His car collision with Miss Raschein’s new vehicle caused $16 in repairs. He was fined $10 plus costs $3.24 and fired by his Madison employer.

Twentieth Century Club Holds Library Meeting

The Twentieth Century club held a special meeting at the library on Thursday afternoon May 17. Miss Smith a nurse from Concord New Hampshire spoke on the vocation of a nurse with emphasis on district visiting nurses duties. Miss Platt outlined future club study plans for the coming year.

Girl Tries to Take Her Life Near Loyd

Stella Fry seventeen daughter of Mr and Mrs Willis Fry near Loyd attempted suicide with a 22 rifle early Thursday. The bullet missed the heart by over an inch and lodged in the lung. She was taken to the Reedsburg hospital, Dr Thadlee attending, and is recovering with no operation needed unless an abscess forms.

Case of Brother Against Brother in Family War Divides Klein Family

The Whitewater Register recounts the Klein family split by World War I loyalties with four sons killed serving in the German army or fighting for France, leaving Joseph Klein of Delavan as the sole survivor. Conductor F T McGirr learned his daughter Miss Carl McGirr, who plans to finish normal school at Platteville next month, is ill with pneumonia. Mrs McGirr left yesterday to be with her daughter, and Mr McGirr and son Gerald may travel to Platteville over Sunday.

After several days of summer heat a tropical thunderstorm drenched Baraboo last night. A pre dawn hail storm followed the rain, causing no reported major damage, and residents welcomed the shower as a blessing.

Mrs. B. A. Martini, aged 36, died this morning at Baraboo hospital after a period of ill health. She and her family resided on the Henry Ringling farm in Fairfield town. She leaves her husband and a two year old son.

Draft bill signed by the president outlines army expansion

The draft bill sets a selective service for males 21 to 30 with exemptions, increases regular army strength, federalizes national guard units, and envisions 500000 initial conscripts with another 500000 if needed.
