Automobiles crowd the Sauk County riverfront as residents join a Wisconsin parade. Folks express strong patriotism, hear an address, and newcomers sign up to support the war effort amid celebratory mood on a May 30 observance along the Wisconsin River.
Wartime patriotism heightened Memorial Day events. J W Worthman read The City of Surcease by Richard E Burton as G A R and W A C groups decorated little green tents. Officers, clergy, and mayor presided as Rev Weed delivered a four fold liberty view and Lincoln memory closed the program.
August Waterstreet, brother of W. F. Waterstreet of Spring Green, was killed at Morrison Illinois by a horse's kick. The animal struck him in the face.
A series of tornadoes struck southeastern Kansas north central Oklahoma and southern Missouri late yesterday causing at least twenty one deaths and over one hundred injuries. Colgate Oklahoma reported 13 dead and 100 injured with western Colgate wiped out. Coffeyville and Moore Kansas faced extensive damage and several fatalities.
Reports indicate German fighting units now receive only three-fifths of the British ration in weight and value. The best fed are reserve troops near the front, while trenches see two meatless days weekly. Sausage rations drop to 2.75 ounces daily as rice is removed and dry turnips replace it.
President Wilson assured northwest spring wheat growers in a personal interview that the government will protect farmers in marketing their crops and keep prices high enough to stimulate production. He said permanent marketing reforms may arise from wartime measures, but there is no plan to fix minimum prices.
King Henry a Kilbourn undertaker and furniture dealer was killed by rifle fire on a Wisconsin River bridge after a supposed night party bound for Fern Dell. Two Kilbourn men were wounded, Baraboo party aided the injured, guardsmen said they fired on challenge. The incident drew in six Kilbourn and Baraboo figures and provoked a hospital transfer of the wounded.
A windstorm toppled the Barnum & Bailey circus tent in Uniontown Pennsylvania killing Mrs Mary Hileman 55 and injuring more than fifty including six in critical condition. Elephants and horses stampeded through the crowd as trainers battled to control them. Over 2 500 spectators were inside the tent when the disaster struck. Emergency crews treated the injured and officials estimated losses at 25000 dollars.
