Mike and Hanna Maher send a Los Angeles dispatch detailing a booming midwinter tourist season. Hotel managers report record crowds, expansion needs, and strong rail and port activity as Southern California thrives with sun, citrus, ships, and new jobs.
J F Montgomery heads the push east to boost condensed milk demand as ship shortages flood the market. A 6,000,000 case year over production looms with prices already down fifty cents per case and more declines expected, while barrels and storages fill Baraboo and Reedsburg.
J. T. Bates Baraboo writes to families of American Expeditionary Forces defending troops against sensational rumors. He cites low venereal disease and discipline rates, quotes a Protestant chaplain and a Catholic chaplain, and praises troops as honest, well behaved, and eager to return home with honor. He urges mothers and fathers to seek confirmation from authorities if doubt remains.
Mrs. Lucius Squire of Portage will leave April 1 for Santa Monica California to accept screen work with the Eddie Foy Motion Picture corporation. Her husband cannot go because he has enlisted in the United States radio corps. The Squires met the Foys in Venice California where they gained experience and the Foys promised future opportunities if the company formed.
Flocks of wild geese have been seen flying northward, with observers noting their V formations and steady movement across the countryside. The sighting aligns with seasonal migration patterns as autumn recedes.
The Reedsburg Woolen mill will make about 500 army blankets daily with an inspector on site. For three years the mill produced cloth for the Island Woolen mill of Baraboo. The plant has been greatly enlarged and now can manufacture much more cloth than before.
Alvina Canaan six year old daughter of Mrs J M Canaan of Cazenovia swallowed a large pin with a pearl head and collar pin. Her mother rushed her to Reedsburg where doctors found the pin lodged head first. The child recovered and returned home well after a frightening episode.
On Thursday evening the aurora borealis lit up much of the sky with pink and pale blue grand flashes and trembling beams. observers noted electrical disturbances as telegraph lines flickered and the display drew wide attention from as far as Washington.
Baraboo Red Cross committee reports on Mae Marsh entertainment at the Al Ringling Theatre. Income and expenses include film rental slides and tickets sold by the Spirit of 76 school children and the orchestra. Net proceeds go to the Baraboo chapter with a balance to be turned over after ticket sales.
In Dellona a fence lacked around six acres of corn, letting cows and horses belonging to Max Kowalski damage crops from October through December. The jury awarded $58.20 to the corn owner, while justice court set $191, resulting in a partial victory for the defendant. Other civil actions were resolved, including a mortgage discharge and a settlement over a $5,000 bank deposit tied to Sophia Nelson. A separate circuit court case saw Emil Scherneck sentenced to five years for arson connected to a North Freedom home incident.
