Red Cross Day Draws Big Crowds in Baraboo

Baraboo hosted Red Cross Day at the Al Ringling theater with afternoon and two evening showings. The program featured patriotic scenes, film of Tuscania disaster victims, Red Cross nurse ushers, and donated orchestra services. About $500 net plus booklet sales supported the Red Cross.

Lyons Red Cross auxiliary reports steady progress with weekly meetings at Mrs. J. D. Martins home. They have made 11 pajama suits 8 hospital shirts and 48 triangle bandages. Donations include 13 child dresses 15 petticoats 10 baby quilts 5 baby hoods 2 booties and more.

Strange accident at a creamery injures Tarnutzer

Lorenz Tarnutzer of Prairie du Sac, worker at Troy & Honey Creek Creamery in Witwen, was found injured after a churning incident. He remembers little and believes he shut off power in a stupor before collapsing at home. His face is badly cut with teeth knocked out and facial injuries, and he lacks full hand control from the force.

Rate Making Power Shift From Wilson In House Action

The Washington house amended the railroad control bill to place rate making power in the Interstate Commerce Commission. The vote was 164 to 157. The bill originally left that power to the president as reported by the house interstate commerce committee. The senate approved a similar amendment.

City Count Holds Meeting on Salary Increases

The city council raised the treasurer’s pay from $900 to $1,000 and the assessor’s salary from $400 to $500. The city will cover the security bond and share of pay. An ordinance may adopt state street paving laws and brick paving costs for Second Avenue. No voter registration. the city will purchase licenses for the fire truck.

Mrs G W Page celebrated her 81st birthday on February 28 1918 at the home of her son in law and daughter 528 South Center street. Family members from Madison Adams Waukegan Reedsburg Baraboo attended with four sons and a daughter. A flaming cake 81 candles Victrola music and photos marked the joyous day. Janesville voters chose aldermanic government after years of the commission form the vote surprised many.

Woman Threatens to Kill the President in Wisconsin

Mrs. A. E. Gebert wife of a Milladore butcher in Wood county Wisconsin was arrested by Deputy Marshal Tueton for threatening the life of President Wilson. She entered a not guilty plea in Wausau and was released on $7500 bond.

Judge Landis to Speak at Red Cross Benefit

Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis of Chicago will address the public at 2 30 Sunday afternoon March 10 in the Al Ringling theatre. Net proceeds go to the Red Cross and allied relief with no charge for his services. Mail Delays Hit Sauk County Rural Routes

Mail from the north part of Sauk County to Prairie du Sac Sauk City Spring Green and Plain is delayed on the afternoon train. The Madison night train was cut, now 5 pm departs too early to carry the daily paper and other mail. Southern towns get items around noon next day and rural carriers miss timely delivery. The economy move caused delays for the weekly as well.

Peter Colby Vanishes After Parole Departure

Sheriff William Welk reports Baraboo resident Peter Colby disappeared after parole officer indicated new trouble. Colby had been paroled for a years term after involvement in a Fourth Street feed store safe removal and later worked near Janesville. He sought to enlist but was barred by his Baraboo record. authorities note Colby fled in response to the parole officer’s concerns.

Man Mound Club Patriotic Meet Recalls Red Cross Talk

A patriotic program at the Man Mound club on February 26 featured school children recitations a flag drill and songs. Edith M. Frazier read on the Red Cross and A S Kingsford Baraboo gave a stirring patriotic address. Members thank Kingsford and announce a March 12 meeting with a home talent play The Last Loaf and a March 5 annual banquet at Frank Kasten’s home.

Hoped Husband Enter War and Die Divorce Granted

Howard A. White was granted a divorce from Katherine E. White by Judge Hoppmann in Madison. The court found cruel and inhuman treatment between June 1 and October 22, 1917. They awarded jointly bought furniture to the defendant, ordered White to pay $200 by April 1, $50 in attorney fees, and costs.
