Firefighters responded to a blaze at James Smith's house on West Main Street in Reedsburg. The roof was burning upon arrival and the fire had gained headway. the first floor furniture survived while most second floor contents were ruined.
The Gem City garage lease ended and Orriel Philbrick took possession. It becomes the Ford headquarters with C F Mathe as head repairer. Philbrick, previously Ford agent at Baraboo, has sold hundreds of the popular car and expects a strong sale season nationwide.
Mr and Mrs F A Nehs return from Florida report orange trees in Jacksonville with fruit hanging frozen on boughs and leaves turned. They note Baraboo residents in St Petersburg and a daily reunion. An aircraft ride costs $10 a minute, an aviator ends up lost in fog, waters, and a fishing camp refuge. The return trip passes Chicago Washington as preparations mount for a capital inauguration.
The Sauk County Y M C A announces an agricultural contest with a Duroc Jersey prize donated by R J Martiny Son of Fairfield. Boys over 10 and under 18 may enter with spring pigs judged at the Baraboo fair in September for a top prize.
Oscar J. Cramer sues John Ederer and sons Joseph and Edward Ederer of Plain over injuries from a fight. Cramer seeks damages claiming permanent injury after a dispute arising from their duties on the local school board. The case is set for the March term of circuit court.
At the Masonic temple a packed Lodge of Sorrow service was held Wednesday night arranged by Worshipful Master J. W. Frenz. Officers Briscoe Thaerer Halsted Smith Kingsford Aton Burn Reisz Pierce Doppler Warner Stadler Gustafson led ritual work with music by a quartet Wichern Herfort Koppke. Rev J Lloyd Smith gave prayer and scripture. A S Kingsford delivered an oration on Masonic ideals citing George Washington and service to man as core to Masonry.
The play A Poor Married Man staged at Lyons Church on Wednesday drew strong attendance and totaled 32.40 in proceeds. Jupiter and the mother in law stirred the house as the cast featured Timothy Towle as Professor Wise and Ruth Kimball as Ruth Kimball with the college crowd including Wesley Gray and Grace Britton in key roles. An orchestra, led by Irwin Foster and Vera Du Bois, provided selections before and between acts.
Reverend F A Gilmore resigns as pastor of the First Unitarian Church Madison after 16 years. He has moved to Texas for missionary work this month with no future plans announced. Interim pastors will lead services during the month.
A February 19 1917 note by P H Crossman reflects on Beautiful Snow as a soothing emblem amid northern winter rigors. The piece contrasts liberal thought with Ponemah years and warns of penalties for writing about snow while praising its serene, fairy like descent.
A man named Hanson drifted into Baraboo and staged a five part brandy and water demonstration. He sought money from churches and businesses, borrowed coins, and was last jailed for ten days after collapsing with something in his boots. Citizens advised ignoring strangers and requesting a privilege card.
Miss Laura Lamont formerly employed as an office clerk at the Lodi creamery will wed farmer Paul Stackman near Reedsburg. A Tuesday evening shower hosted by relatives and friends at J. W. Caldwell’s home preceded a6 o'clock dinner Saturday night at Mrs. W. W. Hadden’s residence in Lodi.

A belated Valentine party in Erie celebrated the engagement of Miss Doris E. Wilby to Charles J. Elzi. Miss Wilby, a popular Erie teacher for four years, is the daughter of Mrs. Reuben Wilby of Baraboo. Mr. Elzi is a Boulder-area druggist from Mr. and Mrs. Peter Elzi.

Fairfield group Klover Klub meets March 9 at the hall. Recitations by Eddie Thomas Ruth Holt and Everett Carlisch solo by Mrs Hart Battles more recitations by Mrs Milton Holt a tableau by Edith Green and Thelma Holt songs by La Mar Brothers plus recitations by Lillian Carlisch and Evelyn Martiny a mixed quartet dialogue led by Olive Thayer and Klover Klub News by Mrs Ben Holt. Music will be featured.
Baraboo residents face higher prices across foods and goods with onions at 10 to 15 cents per pound and potatoes 60 cents a peck. Prices for bananas cranberries and citrus range widely while meat, prunes and coffee also edge upward. The note compares current costs to Civil War era levels and Berlin shortages, citing heavy local purchases of elephants and monkeys without burdening average citizens.
The Lower Narrows Farmers Club met at the schoolhouse with a crowded audience. After a business session the program included songs recitations solos dialogues and a talk by Mr. Johnson. D. E. Williams auctioned twenty five baskets raising 48.50. Next meeting is March 8 at the schoolhouse.
Miss Anna Williams of Portage and her sister Lizzie Williams of Cambria learned via a telegram that a man killed in an Ironton Minnesota iron mine was their brother Richard Williams. The body, found after disappearance for 25 years, was exhumed and identified, then sent to Randolph for burial near Blaen Cae. He was 50 and survived by four sisters including Anna, Lizzie, Margaret, and Mrs. M. H. Morris.
Shipping destroyed since the war began totals ten per cent of the world’s merchant marine as of August 1, 1914, excluding war vessels. The Journal of Commerce reports that wartime shipbuilding has offset many losses.
