Wreck of the Milwaukee Shocks Samoa Visitors and Crew

A long 1917 field letter from Samoa describes the Milwaukee wreck, rescue efforts by bluejackets, and the H-3 salvage scene. It notes four hundred plus sailors evacuated by breeches buoy and surf boats, with no loss of life, amid fog and strong currents. The writer also details Alaska railroad construction at Dead Horse Hill, crew life, and local conditions.

H. H. Attridge from Dead Horse Camp invites questions on life and conditions of Alaska commission projects. He offers to provide definite information on any phase of the work. Editor notes Attridge is a Baraboo native and serves in the engineering department of the Alaskan commission.

Plaster "doctor" in trouble again in Kendall county

Peter Kahl of Willow Lake South Dakota died after treatment by John Till the so called plaster doctor at his Kendall county clinic. Coroner Jones ruled death a homicide from blood poisoning due to gangrene and ulcers from Till plaster applications. Kahl’s brother Henry says Till postponed care and insisted on a second treatment even as Peter’s condition worsened.

Political Equality League Meets on Taxation Talk

Miss Leila Johnson spoke on taxation including general property tax income and inheritance tax and the boards of review. Figures showed tax distribution by locality county and state with details on exemptions and school funding. Mrs Youmans urging organization for woman suffrage was cited and lists of supporters were requested. The April meeting date was moved to the second Wednesday.

Mrs Merlin Hull Receives Thank You Letter From Europe

Mrs Merlin Hull wife of the secretary of state in Black River Falls received a letter from a Polish family helped by gifts she sent two years ago. The child writes of hardship and illness and asks for aid to live on a farm to help the sister heal. The mother Mary Haddow Roseman signs as aunt and mentions a 12th birthday. The note is dated from New York City.
