Miss Vivian Smith writes from Warsaw to her parents about distributing Red Cross aid to 100 gas school soldiers heading to the front. She describes outfits for nurses and cooks, 100 cigarette packages secured, and a joyous Polish parade celebrating General Pilsudski with soldiers, sailors, and civilians.
In Madison, Mrs Esther Schillinger 209 North Hamilton Ir formerly a Y M C A cafeteria cashier pleaded guilty to perjury in her divorce case and to adultery. She broke down in court as Judge Hoppmann ordered the perjury charge and she was remanded to jail while the divorce suit remains unsettled.
Miss Essie Brooks of Reedsburg, representing her congressional district, sends an account of the Milwaukee start of the teachers’ tour. The group met at the Wisconsin Hotel on the 24th for lunch with Milwaukee educators and officials, then traveled by Michigan Central and Lehigh Valley routes toward New York, noting punctuality rules and pleasant travel.
A Friday night rain storm hit the area around 9 pm with considerable hail. W D Johnson reported heavy rain on the bluff south of town and in Baraboo, noting similar intensity in the other location.
A ten minute severe storm hit Madison with rain hail and winds over 30 mph uprooting large trees. Two giant willows in Teenney Park and a maple by Blooming Grove town hall were damaged or felled. Temperature plunged 21 degrees from 89 to 68 within an hour while county damage remained light.

Newspapers nationwide face rising costs as newsprint jumps to over 11 cents per pound for sheet paper used by smaller papers and 5 to 6 cents for larger papers. Prices have climbed steadily since World War I, with July 1 as the upcoming date of impact.
The Wisconsin Railroad Commission held a Baraboo hearing on Mirror Lake water levels. Timme brothers defend current levels, Baker cites harm to lake cottages, and an eighteen inch rise is petitioned. Officials examined fish beds and found no benefit to higher water. A commission decision pending. Superintendent A C Kingsford heads to the National Educational Association meeting in Salt Lake City after stops in Denver and Colorado Springs.
Thousands visited the Baraboo Dells and Devil’s Lake region for Independence Day festivities. Hotels overflowed, visitors sought private lodging, and boats at the Dells carried about 2,000 people on July 4 and 5. Cars arrived from multiple states as restaurants sold out and rain dampened travelers returning home.
United States Deputy Marshal Touton arrested Fred A. Myers at Watertown for possession of beer with more than one half of one percent alcohol. Authorities say he owned about 22 cases of beer at a location not his home. Myers waived a hearing in Madison, pleaded not guilty, and posted a $50 bond.
The first aerial funeral in New York occurred when ashes of Mrs. Sarah D. Brown, temperance advocate and wife of a children's author, were dropped from a seaplane onto the Statue of Liberty. She had requested this disposition years earlier.
