Why Sailor Left Passenger Train
A sailor in uniform rode on train No. 511 from Baraboo to Lodi without paying fare after being told to alight at Baraboo or pay. He declined to provide name and address, then chose to leave the train at Reedsburg. The Baraboo conductor offered to report him to the government for fare collection, which he refused.

S J Hackett of North Freedom received a mud stained German helmet sent by his son Lieutenant Carroll Hackett now in France. Carroll writes of the famous Hill 304 battle where death was common and includes sight of a German boot with a leg.

Baraboo Sergeant Returns From Camp Johnston Florida
Sergeant H. G. Welch returns to Baraboo after about a year in the U S Army. He served at Camp Johnston near Jacksonville where he handled repairs and plumbing during a rush that housed tens of thousands of troops. The camp is now deserted and being dismantled. Welch plans to resume plumbing at the old Third Street stand with his brother L. C. Welch.

Gets Wildcat Near Cassell
Marion Farris set traps near Cassell for weeks and finally captured a mysterious creature. A rabbit entered the trap first, followed by a large owl that became the visible eyes and ears from the crevice. The so called wild cat was later found and described as a rare beautiful specimen.

On Tuesday Harry Wilkinson plowed a sod field in Greenfield and found the work satisfactory. The account notes many farmers plowed in November and December, with more effort possible in January, and invites reports of February to April plowing to claim that Sauf County saw plowing every month of the 1918 1919 mild winter.

West Salem Ordered to Pay Widow for Fatal Arrest
After four years of litigation the state industrial commission orders West Salem to pay $2,400 to Mrs. Alice Voeck. Her husband William Voeck was killed by Walter Jones during an arrest assisted by the village marshal. The Voecks formerly lived in North Freedom.

Sinn Fein Members Form Irish Parliament in Dublin
Twenty five Sinn Fein delegates assembled at Dublin’s Mansion House to form Dail Eireann the Irish Parliament. They elected Charles Burgess Cathal Brugha as speaker and adopted a declaration of independence calling for British troops to evacuate the island. A crowd of about a thousand watched as prayers were said and a chairman was chosen.

Beckrbeck Held On Freight Car Theft Charge
Beckrbeck was held by the 10th Circuit Court at Portage after waiving examination before Justice Kiefer on a charge of breaking into freight cars at night and stealing merchandise. Joseph Beckerbeck was bound over for trial under $1,000 bond and remanded to jail in default of bail.
