Two Chicago banks with assets over 85 million were seized after an examination showed impaired assets. After negotiations, Fort Dearborn National and Fort Dearborn Trust and Savings were bought by Continental and Commercial National and Continental and Commercial Trust and Savings. Clearing house members pooled 2.5 million to protect depositors.

Cushings Lose Team in Fox River
The three Cushing brothers on the old John Cushing homestead near the Soo line bridge in Portage were hauling hay when the sleigh broke through the ice on the Fox River. The rear end sank first, dragging the load. the horses drowned as the team fell into the water.
