Budget figures show estimated disbursements for next year including interest on bonds, water rents, street expenses, and clerk treasury costs. The city owes $25,000 to banks and expects to borrow $1,000 more before taxes, with bonded debt remaining as the main obligation.
The ungraded room of the public schools housed a Wednesday evening exhibit led by Miss Lillian Reinking. Pupils offered daintily painted knickknacks, wooden toys, and sewing projects. Visitors praised the students and noted crafts like recaning chairs and weaving with a loom in the domestic science area.
The Baraboo Valley chapter No. 49 of the Royal Arch Masons held an election of officers Tuesday evening. Elected were F. B. Moss as E. P. H. A. F. Johnson as king Henry Koppke as scribe J. Van Ordan as treasurer H. L. Halsted as secretary and G. T. Thaerer as trustee for three years.
After a month of illness Mrs. Ida Palmer died at her daughter Mrs Bradley Wells home in Lodi. Born 1859 she was the wife of Ira A Palmer a Civil War veteran. Interment will be at Stoughton.
The Methodist church men and ladies Bible classes met in joint session at the Olin Hanson home with a 6:30 supper. Mrs. George McGilvra read on The Dream of Roosevelt and Mrs. Hughes on prohibition. Seventy percent? turnout noted as 33 organized bodies oppose the law.
Francis J. Fielder of Sun Prairie received the maximum 10 years hard labor at Waupun prison from Judge A C Hoppman in Madison after pleading guilty to assaulting his 13 year old daughter. The 35 year old father of seven was arrested on his wife’s complaint.
The Catholic Women's club met at the Parochial school on Wednesday December 14. A music program featured Love Dreams, Voices from the Hillside, and Annie Laurie. Mrs. S. G. Frazier presented a paper on Readings from Mark Twain and discussed Twain's depth beyond humor, citing The Life of Joan of Arc and Innocents Abroad. She also read sections from Tom Sawyer before adjournment for December 28.
The Pioneer Press of Sauk City recalls a Baraboo blaze where townsfolk hurled snow balls onto a fire on the roof to extinguish it. with no fire department, firefighters believed snow would prove as effective as buckets, a memory noted by Mrs. Clara T. Runge.
The seniors beat the juniors 23 to 10 in the final series while the sophomores rout the freshmen 19 to 8. Fourth year men take first honors, third year men second, and second years beat the yearlings for third place. listing of players and baskets follows.

The Twentieth Century club met at Mrs. Oscar Wieglow's home with eight members. They reviewed Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, read by Mrs. H. A. Butterfield and Mrs. F. A. Cooper. The novel centers on New York society in the 1870s and questions Ellen Olenska's divorce, while Newland Archer navigates love and social constraints. The group adjourned to meet in two weeks.
Miss Bernetta Beinkofner of Spring Green was in a Milwaukee auto accident that fractured both legs. She works as a nurse in Milwaukee. Two other occupants were killed.
The remains of Corporal Walter Roy Koerth arrived in Brooklyn New York from overseas. He served in the 59th U S Infantry, was wounded in action and died during the late war. He was the son of Mr and Mrs August Koerth and burial will be in Sauk City.
Guy O. Glazier, once of Baraboo and long based in San Diego, lassoed a giant brown rattlesnake described as the grandfather of them all during a bee hunting trip. He looped a rope over its head and placed the reptile in an empty bee hive later donated to a local Natural History museum. He then reeled in a second snake using a forked stick behind the ears to guide it into the hive.
Mr. and Mrs. D. Joseph Johnson report the voyage of Mrs. Viva Osborn and husband from Peoria to New Orleans and beyond in a small craft named Viva M. They are joined by Jack Sueder, with two other boats the Sunshine and the Isaso. They voyage down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers facing eddys and fogs, docking rarely, and plan to sail along Florida’s coast to New York then up the Hudson and through the Erie Canal before returning home next summer.
The Conservationalist lists fines from Wisconsin game law violations in Madison. Charges include shooting squirrels out of season, hunting without a license, using seines at Sauk Dam, trapping musk rats, and related illegal holds with confiscations by Conservation Warden F A Deckham of Baraboo.
The second series at the local high school gym saw seniors defeat sophomores 37 to 9 and juniors beat freshmen 17 to 4. The final first place contest pits juniors against seniors. Milton Norman Quale of Baraboo and Margaret Hughes of Springvale filed for a Portage marriage license.
James Dibble of the Marriott Shoe Company calmly uses cobbler tools to extract grass from a chicken’s neck and stitches the wound with shoemaker’s twine. The hen quickly recovers and hops about, elated by the successful operation.
Candy Land on Main street Reedsburg changes hands as A G Hillebrandt of Baraboo buys the shop from Joan Sprecher. The interior is being redecorated with painters at work and stock rearranged for a public opening early next week under Hillebrandt and an experienced candy maker. The soda fountain and ice cream parlor will continue operations.
Walter Trachsler attempted to take his life by slashing his throat with a razor this morning. Once employed on the railroad, he was laid off and recently ill. Despondent due to unemployment he slashed his throat twice but did not sever the jugular vein and is expected to recover with care.
Edward A. Bump and Mrs. Leona Moffett were married at the bride’s brother J. Billings home with Rev. W. S. Bowden officiating. The couple, both Baraboo residents and local postal workers, plan to live on Seventh Street and were seen by relatives and friends at a wedding supper following the ceremony.
John Gillem aged 80 and James Gillem with Percy LaMar and Max Kowlski hunted Wednesday and Thursday in Dellona. They bagged two large timber wolves with fatal shot by John Gillem and Kowlski scoring the other. Canine companions aided the hunt and locals collected a $40 bounty while state and county bonuses add up to $20 more. Pelts valued at about $26 each.
