A Yankee Desperado and the Calaveras Canyon Roarer
A San Antonio tale recalls Bob Augustine the so called long ranged Roarer who pressured strangers for loans while Winthrop from Boston foiled him with a pistol holster bluff. After a chase through Commerce Street the Roarer fled and later vanished. Winthrop rose to prominence in Galveston as a merchant prince. The tale ends with the Roarer aged and impoverished in Graveston, its rumors laid to rest.

Congressional Handling of the Draft Issue
The San Antonio Express reports Republican leaders vow to move a preparedness draft before June adjournment. The plan would conscript ages 19 to 25 for two years with 18 to 30 registration and immediate start, while House aims to delay 75 days after passage. Public opinion leans toward compulsory service for national security.
