On Memorial Day May 31, Bandera businesses cooperated with the American Legion to close in memory of the dead. Dozens of stores and services including Bandera Mercantile, First National Bank, Bandera Public Schools, and local trades paused as officials thanked those who served.

Saturday Night Rodeo Draws Large Crowd
Ray Wharton won the tie-down calf event at the Bander a Rodeo Association rodeo held last Saturday night. Mansfield Autry took second with 15.0 seconds, followed by Bob Mansfield third and Red Smith fourth. Fast times in break away calf roping included Walter Spell and Felix Billings tying at 4.0 seconds. Other event winners were Johnny Bell in saddle bronc, Rod Sommers in Brahman steer riding, Lynn McClarity in steer wrestling, and Tuffy Boyle in barrel racing with 12.3 seconds.

The Frontier Drug Store recently opened in the Frontier Hotel and draws Bandera shoppers with a full line of drugs cosmetics fountain service and a pharmacist on duty at all times. Owners Harold and Mrs. Brooks are well known in the county. Mrs Brooks is Elsie Faris formerly of the O S T Cafe and a local girl with many friends. Mr Brooks is a University of Washington Pharmacy graduate and a registered pharmacist. The store is cool inviting and modern.

Bluebonnet State for Girls opened in Austin Wednesday with Bandera County selections Rosa Lyn Hunt and Janie Whitehead chosen for outstanding citizenship sportsmanship and scholastics. Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lions Club of Bandera the girls are highlighted for popularity in their communities. The state program trains girls from across Texas in government for one week.

Memorial Service at Bandera High School Football Field
The American Legion held its annual memorial service at the Bandera High School football field. George Harrison gave the opening remarks and a short address. The San Antonio American Legion Tableau Team led by Henry Palmie hosted the program. A Flanders Field in miniature scene featured a wreath placed on the tomb of the unknown soldier by Buddy Ernst Lindner, with George Harrison and Wallace Browne assisting. Rev Halick of Kerrville pronounced the benediction.
