New Recruits Rush to Join 2nd Montana Regiment

Local recruiting stations report steady enlistment as Saturday is set for drafting. Men of conscript age volunteer to avoid forced service and lose control over branch choice. The 2nd Montana regiment moves toward mobilization in Helena, then Palo Alto California for ninety days training at Camp Freeman in Menlo Park. Montreal July 17 W J Hanna dominion food controller warned that some form of compulsion and price fixing might be necessary to conserve food supplies for Canada and the United States He spoke before the Canadian club outlining measures to feed the home population while ensuring export to the entente allies.

Tomesteader Dies in Heart Failure near Baker

Edgar Olmsted aged about sixty was found dead in his home 22 miles south of Baker. Coroner ruled heart failure with no foul play. He was born in New York and buried in Katskill, N Y. Survived by three brothers and a sister in Connecticut and a brother in Texas. nephew E B Meddaugh resides locally.

The Congregational church has called Rev. Benson of Clinton Minnesota after months without a pastor. He preached last Sunday on Following an Ideal and will start his pastorate August 5th with his family arriving about November 1st.

Odd Fellows Lodge Instituted in Ollie Montana Golden Star No 126

An Odd Fellow lodge was instituted at Ollie Montana last Saturday by J E Parker Grand Master Missoula assisted by W W Palmer Grand Warden F C Eagels Walter Jeffers and D L Stevens. Eight charter members formed Golden Star Lodge No 126. The event drew 93 initiation applications and 3 initiates. Baker lodge degree team performed the work. A Baker delegation attended and a midnight banquet at Hotel Irving served 163. Officers installed included C O Brady N G Leander Greiner W G John K K Tatley secretary and David F Wilson treasurer. Receipts for the evening reached $1500 plus dues.

Farmers Elevator to Hold Annual Meeting for Dividend and Elections

The Plevna farmers' elevator company will hold its annual meeting on Saturday July 28 to declare dividends and elect directors for the coming year. The elevator has had strong business and is expected to declare a substantial dividend. Last month it paid eight percent to stockholders and three and a half cents a bushel over grain price.

Williams Brother Visits Before Palo Alto Training

Harry Williams brother of Clerk Howard Williams of the local recruiting station arrived Monday and, after a brief visit with his parents at Ekalaka, returned to his company at Whitefish. He reports the men there are in fine shape and eager to start for Palo Alto, Cal, for ninety days of training before heading to the war front.

Washington July 17 An appeal to the business world to keep war conduct clean and patriotic as in France and Flanders urges civilian patriots to back the president and resist profiteering in steel coal munitions and food. Lutherans Affirm Loyalty to Nation in War Time

Twenty seven pastors and nine branch heads of the Lutheran Church of America in Nebraska endorsed a resolution declaring loyalty to the government and nation. S J Emschler U S Commissioner at Ekalaka passed through on the way home after a Miles City trip. Forest fires of small caliber draw forest service attention with blazes reported near Lake Como upper Letter Root valley near Lothrop Coeur d Alene district and Bonita east of Missoula. One blaze north of Potomac was extinguished last week. Fire fighting forces of competent woodsmen are being sent to burn areas to suppress the fires.

Married Men Exempt From Draft Under New County Rules

The county exemption board released regulations exempting married men and others with dependents from the draft. Exemptions cover married men, sons of widows, fathers of motherless children, officers, pilots, and religi ous sect members. Claims must be filed within ten days after notice, with required proof, and may be appealed to district boards.
