Free coinage of silver examined by a reader

Dublin readers seek a plain answer on free coinage. The writer explains that free coinage means minting silver into legal tender at no cost to the holder, but warns the real issue is the 16 to 1 ratio and its effect on the currency, arguing it could drive gold out and force fiat money. The piece notes bimetallists favor equal-valued gold and silver in the dollar, yet warns government printing of greenbacks could follow.
