A lengthy 1892 letter from Newton, Georgia, warns Alliance members that secret bands and third party tactics are unraveling the solid South. It accuses Alliance leaders of disloyalty, cites Ocala demands, and calls for unity to prevent the South from becoming divided and vulnerable to Republican influence. It also mentions Gideon’s Band, McCune’s circle, and warns of social disruption if the alliance faction fractures.
The Savannah News applauds Ben Russell for his persuasive stump speech and notes J. R. Robins conceded error in a Adel debate. Robins, a Third party leader in the Eighth district, said third party debates with Russell would doom the new party, but Russell fired Democratic shots and Robins capitulated with honor.
It is lamented that many in this great county have let passions be inflamed by unscrupulous demagogues whose sole aim is political office. The result has harmed the country and the effects will linger for some time.
The letter argues that government owned railroads would be untaxed by states counties and towns, shifting tax burden to other property and raising rates. It accuses Third Party reformers of masking relief while proposing exempting railroads from taxes and notes Democrats should abandon the party. It then shifts to a separate point on earthworms enhancing soil fertility by casting and mixing soil, warning against destroying them and stressing their role in soil fermentation and crop growth.
Henry Grady warns against a Third Party in the South urging white unity to avoid alienating black voters. He cautions that divided white ranks and treacherous black votes could fuel factional debauchery, risking degradation of suffrage, peace, and rights, while urging integrity and broader civic vision.
