In view of possible success of free silver this year, observers foresee an international agreement following U S actions. British and European figures foresee gold flow back, trade stimulus, and pressured shifts toward silver and global financial alignment led by the United States, with bankers and press voices weighing the likelihood of coordinated reforms.
A report from Early County News tours Jakin and Blakely noting Bivlings Bros. Lumber Co. works with Ira Martin and Bernard Beckham as local workers. From Climax Georgia a July 28 1896 letter to Judge Meadows reveals a party paid for a marriage license but the groom says he did not wed the girl and implies she may marry someone else, leaving the judge to handle the missing couple and the license return. The missive shows the social uproar over a late license and the groom’s cheeky tone.
A notice explains that only voters registered in 1896 can vote in the coming fall elections. Voters must register in person with the tax collector or clerk and sign an oath or mark. It is illegal for another to register on someone else’s behalf. A Texas tale follows: an undertaker shows a man labeled coffins for those who fail to advertise are effectively dead.
In accordance with the Democratic Executive Committee resolutions a Democratic primary will be held in all districts of Decatur County on Saturday August 15 1896 at respective precincts. Voters will nominate a State Senator two state representatives and county officers with the highest vote for each office declared the nominees. Delegates to the Senatorial convention will be chosen and returns brought to Bainbridge by Monday August 17 1896 for consolidation. The Bainbridge Graded School will begin September 7 with Co W Smalling A M principal Miss Francis B Jackson first assistant Miss Van Mitchell third assistant and possibly a fourth. Tuition for nine months includes a matriculation fee and graded level charges with a payment schedule and strict admission rules.
