Cleveland May 29 The Republican state convention ended with a strong ovation to Senator Hanna. General Grosvenor chaired, and the platform praised Roosevelt and Hanna while opposing trusts. The ticket named Laylin Crew Ankeny Kirtley Jr. and endorsed continued opposition to restrained trade.
Rome correspondence says at the June 9 consistory the pope will nominate Archbishop Keane of Dubuque Iowa to succeed the late Archbishop Corrigan of New York City.
Havana May 20. The Cuban house of representatives revised an amnesty bill to grant it only to native born Americans and sent it to the senate. The body set a presidential salary at 25 000 and congress at 36 000. Palma’s message was published before delivery, triggering a scandal and an official inquiry.
The body of Lord Pauncefote British ambassador to Washington received a national funeral with full government and diplomatic representation. Military honors were shown by a thousand armed men before his remains were moved to Rock Creek cemetery for eventual transfer by U.S. warship to his ancestral home in Britain.
The Kansas Republican state convention in Wichita nominated W. J. Bailey for governor and D. J. Hanna, Joseph R. Burrow, Seth G. Wells, H S Mason, J C Pollock, A L Greene, A H Ellis, E W Cunningham, C S Scott, T T Kelly, C C Coleman, and L T Dayhoff for state offices. Roosevelt sentiment highlighted the session. In Newport Rhode Island Harry Oelrichs of New York died at his cottage aged 45 after a long illness. He was Columbia College educated and a New York lawyer who once led the Anglo American Cattle Co in Dakota and founded a town named for him.
Chicago May 29 Forty thousand workers at the Union Stock Yards may join a general stoppage if the four major packing concerns do not meet the teamsters demands. Hundreds already quit and the labor federation rules complicate continued work with potential widespread disruptions across beef and hog departments. Box makers at National Box Co struck over packing duties and American Express refused meat handling to avoid teamster strikes.
In Wilkesbarre reports show few firemen and pump men oppose joining the strike if an 8 hour day is granted. Some engineers oppose quitting. Operators hold secret talks to protect properties as Coxe Bros. mine workers around 300 prepare to strike if concessions fail.
At a general meeting on May 29 Hamburg the shareholders unanimously approved a directors proposal to keep control of the company in German hands. The measure requires that both the directors and the board of supervision remain German.
In Germany the article notes that a company may transfer its seat abroad or dissolve only if shareholders representing four fifths of the capital approve at a general meeting and a confirmation by the same majority occurs at a second meeting. Fort Dodge authorities arrest Patrick Harrington for the Chelseat murder case and as a suspected member of a railroad laborer gang and a winter bank robbery group.
Elizabeth Colescott Clarkson widow of Coker F. Clarkson and mother of James S. Clarkson of New York and R. P. Clark, editor of The Iowa State Register, died here after a two day illness. She was 82.
In Chattanooga on May 29 the International Emigration and Commercial association prepared a petition to the president and Congress requesting a 500 million dollar appropriation to aid African Americans to leave the United States. The document cites social and political disenfranchisement and violations of constitutional rights, led by Bishop Turner of Georgia and former Liberia envoy Heard.
Pittsburg May 29. The 44th general assembly of the United Presbyterian church opened in the Eighth United Presbyterian church with the retiring moderator Rev Dr J A Thompson delivering the final sermon. About 250 delegates attended from nearly all U S states and from Canada Mexico Egypt and India for ten days or two weeks of deliberations.
