An agent for a West Virginia coal company recruiting men to go South was assaulted by striking miners and sympathizers in Wilkesbarre. He tried to flee by boarding an electric car but was pulled from it and severely beaten as he sought to take workers to West Virginia to replace strikers.

London May 31 The Hon Michael Henry Herbert secretary to the British embassy at Paris is expected to become the next British ambassador to the United States succeeding the late Lord Pauncefote. Royal approval remains the only hurdle with King Edward personally involved. Herbert’s prior Washington roles and Paris duties position him for the post. salary for the role could reach £9,000 yearly.
King Edward vested the Duke of Marlborough and the Duke of Bedford with the Order of the Garter insignia at Buckingham Palace in a ceremonial revival aimed at restoring former pomp. The event drew a notable company including the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Connaught, the Marquis of Salisbury, the Marquis of Londonderry and the Duke of Norfolk.

Daniel Hill a wealthy board of trade man said by doctors to be improving spoke to reporters. He attributed his shooting to burglars and expressed greater respect for them than for insinuations about Mrs Hill s involvement.
Washington May 31 Decoration day drew large crowds to Arlington Cemetery as President Roosevelt gave the main address. The Fourth battery fired a national salute at noon and the Marine band with the memorial choir provided music. The tomb of the unknown dead was decorated by a committee from G A R groups and auxiliaries. Roosevelt spoke to an attentive audience amid applause after reading Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. General Eli Torrance spoke briefly before the service ended with America and benediction by Henry S. Stevens.
